Javier Rosique Palavicini Classic
TEMPTING SPLASH DASH
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
For this classic in honor of Javier Rosique Palavicini, breeder and horseman from Tabasco, there were eight runners four years and older, all
raised in the United States, and whose owners paid the corresponding registration fee with which they integrated to a purse of $333,000 pesos (approx. $16,090 US), including the contribution of the Hipodromo de Las Américas Racetrack.
The final race was run on June 17 at a distance of 300 yards, highlighting the presence of Chicks Love Curls, designated as Horse of the Year and Champion American Aged Horse in 2017 by the Mexican Association of Quarter Horse Breeders and Horsemen, a subsidiary
in Mexico of the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA); merits that earned him the preference of the public at the box office.
Once positioned in the gates, the race began. At the break, Divas Sweet Jess (#6) was bumped on both sides, causing him to stumble and lose important fractions of a second. However, the race flowed quickly, with Carl Fourteen (#1) at the front, who was soon caught by Chicks Love Curls (#4) and Tempting Splash Dash (#5); a beautiful trio-race was formed that led to the finish line, with the latter in front and leaving the two aforementioned in the rear.
Tempting Splash Dash (Tempting Dash- Thebabeisback, Splash Bac), completed his triumph in :14.89 for a 106 speed index, setting a New Track Record and improving the :14.90 marked the previous mark set by Soliat on April 30, 2017. The colt was
under experienced rider Rogelio Sáenz, who since May 6 has shared his trade between the races in the north of the country and the Hipódromo de Las Américas, this being the first triumph he gets at this track.
Raised by Bob
McClure, the sorrel colt
is owned by Cuadra
Zamarrero, and for this
commitment was saddled
by Antonio De La Rosa
López. In 12 starts, his record stands at 5-3-1, including wins in the Easily A Possum Classic and the Mexican Derby in 2017. For this win, he added $199,800 pesos (approx. $9,654 US) to his earnings account, which already exceeds $1.1 million pesos.
Representing Javier Rosique Palavicini was his granddaughter Miss Karla Rosique, who was present at the awards ceremony and gave Tracy Harries a tray commemorat- ing the race.
Chicks Love Curls (Spit Curl Jess-First Prize Chic) finished in second place, a neck behind the winner, under the command of Paul Osvaldo Rodríguez. The colt is owned by Cuadra Díaz de León and trained by Epifanio Carrasco Sandoval.
In third was Carl Fourteen (Ivory James-Sweethearts Lady) who was ridden by Martín Hernández Bautista for owner Rancho Las Gavias and trainer Ángel Gustavo Magdaleno.
The other finalists were: Tessta Rossa (Azoom–
Remember Me Rose), Grande Tiempo (Bigtime Favorite-Power Edge), Divas Sweet Jess (One Sweet Jess–Splendiferous Diva), Jess La Jolla Blue (Jess Louisiana Blue–To Brenda With Love) and Conquests (FDD Dynasty–Itsmybag TB).
