Sound Dash Handicap
KISS THRU FIRE
by Tracy Gantz
Kiss Thru Fire has been collecting stakes trophies all year at Los Alamitos. With only three weeks since her victory in the California Breeders’ Matron
Stakes-RG3, she added the $20,000 Sound Dash Handicap on Oct. 9.
Several runners bumped at the start of the 300- yard Sound Dash, which was hand-timed due to a timer malfunction. Kiss Thru Fire got away well
for jockey Raul Valenzuela, though in fourth. She powered home strongly to score by a neck in :15.420, posting a 94 speed index.
Juan Aleman trains Kiss Thru Fire for Robert Kirk Gentry, whose Gentry Farms owns and bred the three-year-old filly. Kiss Thru Fire earlier this year captured the Charger Bar Handicap-G1 and Denim N Diamonds Handicap, and in 2020 she ran second in the All American Oaks.
Gentry Farms has had Kiss Thru Fire’s family for seven generations and bred her in Kentucky from homebred Fredaville. A full sister to Champion Fredricksburg, Fredaville was the Champion Aged Mare of 2012 and a seven-time stakes winner.
She has produced five winners from six starters, including Mexico stakes winner Beer Wagon and graded stakes-placed Kiss My Heineken.
Ruben Lozano rode 3-year-old Gotta Corona Jess (Apollitical Jess-Gotta Corona Pop) to second for owner Manuel Alvarez and trainer Lindolfo Diaz
Paul Jones trains third-place Suite Expectations (Apollitical Jess-Just A Fairytale) and co-owns the four-year-old filly with Thompson Racing Inc. Jesus Ayala was aboard.
Completing the field were Cotton Cartel (Special Cartel-Cotton Belle TB), Elphaba (Kiss My Hocks-Witchs Streak), Political Babbel (Apollitical Jess-Shanachee), Cartel Fire Two (Foose-Cartel Fire), and Terrific Temper (Tempting Dash-Terrific Energy).
Aqualina Handicap
JESSANOTHERCOMMANDO
by Tracy Gantz
Trainer Jose Flores knew that Jess Anothercommando was capable of a big effort, given her bloodlines, and he finally got one out of the filly in the $20,000 Aqualina Handicap at Los Alamitos on Oct. 23.
“We’ve been waiting for her to show up like that,” the trainer said.
With Cruz Mendez in the irons, Jess Anothercommando went off as the 17-10 favorite, having just won an allowance race, her second win in six starts. She bulleted away from the gate, but had rivals close to her on either side. Jess Anothercommando fended them off to win by 3/4-length in :15.667 for 300 yards.
Veronica Hernandez bred Jess Anothercommando in California and races her. Hector Hernandez raced Coronatac, the dam of Jess Anothercommando, and Coronatac is one of two broodmares the family keeps at their acreage in San Bernardino, California.
Coronatac has produced seven winners from 11 starters, including Commando Tres Seis. Though
he didn’t win a stakes, being injured in his fifth start, Commando Tres Seis qualified to the 2012 Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity-G1 for owner Hernandez and trainer Flores. Flores called him “one of the fastest horses probably that we’ve had.”
Dr. Ed Allred’s homebred Budget Buster (Kiddy Up-Jetsetter) finished second under jockey Victor Salazar and trainer Scott Willoughby. Flores also trains third-place Favorite First Down (Favorite Cartel-First Down Fast) and owns her with Layne Sprouse. Irving Lara piloted Favorite First Down.
Completing the field were Val Frida (Stel Corona-Favorite Strawfly), Cumbia (Caritas- One Famous Swan), Burning Dream (Kiddy Up-California Wildfire), and Seems Up (Seperate Interest-Up For It). Traceys Gold was scratched.
Picov Derby
STREAKINLILWAGON
by Danny Camp
Streakinlilwagon wins races in streaks - last year she won four in a row and this year she has won her last four consecutive starts. Her latest was in the $48,108 Picov Derby at Ajax Downs on Sept. 29 contested at 400yards.
As the filly stepped away from the 6-post, the ground broke out from underneath her causing her to veer out just a bit. Jockey Ismael Mosqueira was there to help correct the filly, allowing them to cross the line 3/4-lengths in front. They completed the distance in :20.326, earning an 88 speed index.
Trained by Jason Pascoe, the second fastest qualifier from the Sept. 1 trials also earned the
first place check worth $19,244 for owner/breeder GFR Equine Services. She has now earned a total of $133,862, and her race record stands at nine wins out of 14 races, with three stakes victories.
GFR Equine Services bred Streakinlilwagon out of lightly raced La Jollas Fortune. The mare has produced two winners from four starters, both stakes winners including 2014 Picov Derby winner Streakinshagginwagon.
Twixt Of Fate (Streakin Six Cartel-Eyesa Quick) was second for owner Richard Wincikaby and trainer Michelle Woodley. Brian Bell was in the irons.
Had To Be Relentless (Hes Relentless-Had To Be Fandango) scored a third place finish. He is owned by Carol and Jaime Robertson and trained by Bryn Robertson. Josh Scott was handling the reins.
The remaining order of finish was, Americas Rocket Man (Coronado Cartel-RBJ Running Moon), Jessaprimadonna (One Sweet Jess-Favorite Primadonna,) JM Southern Express (Freighttrain B-Southern Skye), SR Blue Hawk (Second Painted Sign-La Esterlina), KK Blue Cartel (Five Bar Cartel- Sandra Sue Blue) and Rosie Perry (Mr Jess Perry- Black Rosalita).
