South Dakota Bred Stakes
RELENTLESS STREAK
by John Moorehouse
Relentless Streak, owned and trained by Tyler Stein, was a prompt even-money favorite in the $15,000 South Dakota Bred Stakes at Fort Pierre on Oct. 3. Ridden by Zack Ziegler, Relentless Streak went
250 yards in :13.879 on a surface officially labeled “heavy,” and his margin of victory was a neck from 3-2 second choice One Famous Phoebe. The black gelding earned $7,800 from his first career stakes win.
Relentless Streak was coming off a second-place finish in a 300-yard dash for $10,000 claimers at Prairie Meadows on Sept. 5. Raced in four states, including Oklahoma and Minnesota, the gelding has won two of 11 outs and has earned $26,227, of which $20,825 has been pocketed from seven starts this season.
Relentless Streak was bred by Tom Maher and Bill Maher. The gelding is out of winner Painted Streaks. She has produced one winner from two starters. His second dam, winner Streakin Rare, ran third in the 2009 Iowa Quarter Horse Racing Association Fall Sale Futurity-RG3 at Prairie Meadows. Relentless Streak traces back to his fifth dam, Summer Encounter, a winning daughter of Hempen TB who ran third in the 1981 Rainbow Futurity and was a finalist in that season’s All American Futurity.
One Famous Phoebe (Hes Relentless-Classic Caliente) banked $3,450 to bring her earnings to $25,088 from 10 races. Jake Olesiak rode the stakes- winning sophomore filly for owner Broken Heart Ranch and trainer Robert Johnson.
Fast Ivory Eyes (Hasta Be Fast-Ivory Eyes) ran third, a half of a length behind Relentless Streak, while earning $2,250 for her owner, the Dean Lemburg Estate. Uriel Cervantes rode the homebred 3-year-old filly for trainer Robert Johnson.
Jessabluemoonlady (First Down Mr Jess-Wave Me To The Moon) finished fourth, 2 1/2-lengths behind Relentless Streak.
Canada Cup Derby
FLIGHT CLUB
by Danny Camp
The Canada Quarter Horse Cup Derby was hosted by Century Mile on a windy, rainy day and over a sloppy track. The 400-yard stakes carried a total purse worth $27,510.
Flight Club stepped away from the 6 post in eighth and jockey Ricardo Moreno let his mount find his footing. Then, Flight Club took flight.
The gray colt gained ground with every step. He held third at first call and was ahead by the top of the stretch. Flight Club stopped the clock at 20.222 to earn an 83 speed index with a length to spare.
The son of Foose earned the $12,380 winner’s share and he now has a bankroll worth $43,239. His race record stands at four wins in seven career starts, with a victory in the 2020 Evergreen Park Juvenile Challenge. He was also a finalist in the 2020 AQHA Juvenile Challenge Championship-G2 and fourth in the Evergreen Park Derby Challenge just prior to this win. His team includes owner Charles G Stojan and trainer William H Leech. He was bred in California by Steve D Burns out of the mare Separate Flight, dam of eight foals; Flight Club is her best product. Royale Runaway (First Timber-Sparkling Hy) broke like a champ and ran a gritty race to bank the second place check. Connections include owner Brant and Dakota Laczo. Brant is the trainer and Martin Ortiz was handling the reins. Bright Foo Fighter (Gone To The Mountain-Dj Bright Sweetheart) broke slowly but hustled under jockey Silvino Morales for third place. The colt is owned by Gonetothebrightside Syndicate and trained by William H Leech.
Followed by Eyesa Timber (First Timber-Eyesa Perry), Ulnvme To (First Timber-Ulnvme), Timbers Express (First Timber-Daddys Express Girl), Obsessed Way (Obsessed With Corona-Dash N Way), Cerveza Corona (Favorite Cartel-Corona Mas Fina), Jess Be First (First Timber-Ima Jess A Streaker) & Jagnestimber (First Timber-Gilded Gold).
Autumn Derby
TELL FOOSE
by John Moorehouse
Tell Foose is experiencing the opposite of a sophomore slump. The three-year-old gelding posted his third straight win on Oct. 11, taking the $35,000 Autumn Derby at Grants Pass.
Trained by Hector Magallanes, Tell Foose broke well from the No. 7 gate and battled with Lionized for the entirety of the derby. Tell Foose emerged at the front by a head going into the stretch, holding off Lionized to hit the wire first by a neck. Martin Osuna was aboard as Tell Foose finished the 400 yards in :19.923, posting a 97 speed index.
Ruben Magallanes owns Tell Foose and collected a $14,000 payday, nearly doubling the gelding’s prior career earnings to $29,933.
Tell Foose has made four outs this year, all at Grants Pass. He finished third in a May 18 allowance then started this win streak, which included his Sept. 28 Autumn Derby trial which saw him finish his 400- yard run in :19.680 as the fastest qualifier.
Martha Wells, the AQHA Champion Owner in 2020, bred Tell Foose out of Chicks Tell. Tell Foose is a half-sibling to nine horses who also have black type, a group headed by two-time Champion Tell Cartel and multiple stakes winner Forrest Fire.
Magallanes also trains Lionized (Bodacious Dash-Flyin Lion), who is owned by Mike and Sherry Reardon. Alex Anaya drew the riding assignment.
Dahock (Zoomin For Bux-Lanty Bug) hit the board in third place under Luis Gonzalez for owner/ breeder Malon Cowgill and trainer Benito Curiel.
The remaining order of finish was Not Another Lover (Sixthirteen TB-Lover Cat), Super Bowl Sunny Day (PYC Prize Time-Holland Last Star), Half Interest (Seperate Interest-Enjoy The Walk), The Streakin Queen (Kiss My Hocks-The Streakin Clean) and One Sweet Lippy (One Sweet Jess- Adasha Lucky Lippy). Jess Ozzy and Skyywalker were scratched.
