Sandia QH/TB Stakes
CLEAREDFURRTAKEOFF
by Michael Cusortelli
Sent to post at odds of 9-1 in a field of six, Richard Joneson’s Cleared Furr Takeoff scored his first stakes victory in the $35,000 Sandia Stakes at Albuquerque Downs on Oct. 23.
Cleared Furr Takeoff covered 870 yards in a hand-timed :45.420 while defeating odds-on favorite Mahoney N Tacklebery by a half of a length. Benito Baca rode the homebred sophomore son of the Oak Tree Special stallion Furrtreeous for trainer Bernard Baca and breeder/owner Joneson.
Cleared Furr Takeoff was bred in Oklahoma, and he was coming off of a second-place finish in an 870-yard $30,200 non-winners-of-two allowance race at Albuquerque Downs on Sept. 15.
The brown gelding is out of No Snoozin Floozie, a homebred winning and multiple stakes placed daughter of Dash For Cash stallion Takin On The Cash.
A $6,250 claimer during the Remington Park spring meet, Cleared Furr Takeoff has won two
of 10 races, and the $17,500 winner’s share of the purse from his first stakes win pushed his bankroll to $35,279, of which $34,617 has been earned from seven starts this season.
Ben Peterson’s Mahoney N Tacklebery (Favorite Cartel-Fountain Bleu) pocketed the $7,525 runner-up share of the purse to bring his earnings to $230,770 from 37 races, 19 of which have been at the 870-yard distance. Jesus Valenzuela rode the 7-year-old Utah- bred gelding for trainer Riley Moosman.
Holy Storm (Red Storm Cat-Holy White Socks) ran third, 2 1/4-lengths behind Cleared Furr Takeoff, and banked $3,850 for his owner, Daniel Kjorsvik. Daniel Torres rode the homebred 5-year- old Minnesota-bred gelding for trainer Pat Swan.

KOWBOY JIM
by Danny Camp
Kowboy Jim is two for two in his last starts with his latest being in the $40,000 Downs Casino Stakes at The Downs of Albuquerque on Oct. 23. With Cody Smith aboard, the gelding broke
sharply from the 6-post on the lead. They steadily bested the field with a 1/2-length lead at the halfway point to cross the wire with a 3/4-length margin.
They completed the 440 yards wire-to-wire in :21.317, while posting a 97 speed index. Kowboy Jim brought home the $19,200 winner’s share of the purse for breeder/owner/trainer Dean Frey, which boosted his total lifetime earnings to $251,450.
From an impressive 39 starts, Kowboy Jim has
also won the Canterbury Park Derby, Canterbury Championship Challenge and Cheryl White Memorial. He has also placed in seven other stakes, including the AQHA Derby Championship Challenge-G3.
Frey bred Kowboy Jim out of winner Counting On You. Kowboy Jim is her first winner from two starters.
Mitey Political (Apollitical Jess-Mitey Moon) overcame a bump at the start and was straightened by Jockey Sergio Dominguez. They made an impressive surge at the end to bank second place money for owners Charles and Dixie Patterson and trainer Donna McArthur. The gelding was also second in the John Andreini Memorial earlier this year, and he ran fourth in last year’s Downs Casino Stakes.
Walcott (Tee Cos-Jess Maganette) finished in third under Jaime Leos for owner Pedro Marquez Gutierrez and trainer. The colt won the 2018 Altoona Derby and Mile High Derby.
Man Of Faith (One Handsome Man-Rockets Glare), Twelve Percent (High Rate Of Return- Tricks On The Side), Mias Irish Dynasty (Jr Dynasty Mountain-Mias Runnin), Valiant Tort (Valiant Hero-Queen Of Torts) and Jess My Kiss (One Sweet Jess-Dreaming Of Kisses) completed the order of finish.
