Mexican Breeders Futurity Challenge-RG3
ANDY CARTEL
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translated by Speedhorse
On October 1, eight trial races were held for the Mexican Breeders Futurity Challenge-RG3, in which 73 Mexican-bred
horses participated that were nominated by their breeders and whose owners paid the fees. Advancing to the final were the horses who clocked the ten fastest times in the agreed 350
yards, with gelding Andy Cartel topping the qualifier list with :17.433, followed by AG First Jess Perry who clocked :17.471. The Cuadra Baldeli was dominant in this first stage by qualifying the aforementioned Andy Cartel, Krashing Queen and DK Fire One.
Three weeks later, they returned to the stage at the Hipodromo de las Americas to determine the winner, all showing their class and preparation. The spotlight was on Andy Cartel, which closed with odds of 0.85 to win.
When the gates opened, RG Nat My Love stumbled, which left her without the opportunity to finish in the money. On the other hand, AG First Jess Perry, who started from the 10-post, diverted his trajectory to the outside rail.
The rest of the runners followed a good trajectory without presenting any problems. The
speed of the filly Krashing Queen from the 1-post stood out immediately and then Andy Cartel (#2) established himself at the head of the group under the direction of Leonardo Vidaña, achieving a resounding victory by 2 3/4-lengths over Red Possis.
Andy Cartel and
Leonardo Vidaña crossed the
350-yards in :17.09 for a 94
speed index, the best of his career consisting of 4-1-0 in 6 starts.
When the official verdict was given, horse and rider went to the winner’s circle where they were received by members and followers of the Cuadra Baldellí, represented by trainer Luis Enrique Cruz Solís. The awards were presented by Adriana Gómez Barnola and Manuel Queijeiro, members of the Board
of Directors of the Mexican Quarter Horse Association, accompanied by José Mauricio Dorantes, Operations Manager of the Hipódromo de Las Américas.
Andy Cartel is a bay gelding who was bred by Abelardo Gallegos Fernandez at his Rancho Los Potrillos, home of the stallion Krash Cartel and the mare First Lips by Jess Lips. In the 2022 Select Yearling Auction he was sold for $500,000 pesos ($24,778 U.S. approx.), becoming the property of the Cuadra Baldeli. He debuted on March 19,
winning at 220 yards. Strangely, this is the first futurity in which he participated, passing up the opportunity to be in competitions such as the Mexico Futurity, Garañones Futurity and Subasta Selecta Futurity.
This futurity had a total purse of $4,058,080 pesos ($219,726 U.S. approx.), of which $1,704,394 pesos ($92,285 U.S. approx.) were added to Andy Cartel’s account.
The filly Red Possis (Red Storm Cat-Three Possibilities) placed second with Carlos De Jesus Baltazar Herrera in the irons. She is owned Rancho San Pedro PZH, was saddled
