 Go Man Go Handicap-G1
COLD CASH 123
  by Tracy Gantz
His first start at Los Alamitos, 400 yards instead of his preferred 440, a slew of outstanding local runners lined up against
him—none of it mattered. Cold Cash 123 demonstrated why he’s the reigning World Champion, engulfing his rivals at the end of the Sept. 23 Go Man Go Handicap in a dis- play of excellence that was a sight to behold.
“This was quite a test for him,” said Carolyn Bay, who owns and bred Cold Cash 123 with her husband, Walt. “He did well, and we were proud of him.”
Cold Cash 123 went off as the second choice at more than 2-1. Terrific Synergy, winner of the Governor’s Cup Derby-RG2, was favored
at 9-5. The field also included Champion Aged Gelding Rylees Boy and Los Alamitos 400-yard track-record holder Chivalry SR.
Creston Goer popped out of the gate so quickly that normal horses would have had trouble catching him at 400 yards. However, Cold Cash 123 is anything but normal. In the past he has broken somewhat slowly. This time he came out straight and quickly, breaking third under regular rider Roy Baldillez and soon taking over second. Midway through the race, Cold Cash 123 clicked into his ground-devour- ing stride that shot him past a game Creston Goer to win by a half-length in :19.511.
“Creston Goer had us beat by over a length,” said Baldillez of the early part of the race. “He ran as if he was shot out of a cannon, but as the race went on, we were making up ground with every jump. I didn’t want to over- ride him or try to play catch-up too early. I had to leave the horse to do his job.”
Cold Cash 123 responded to Baldillez’s hand ride and bulleted home, prompting track announcer Ed Burgart to term Cold Cash 123 “one of the best horses I’ve ever called here at Los Alamitos.”
Carolyn Bay watched her horse with pride.
“I said to Roy, ‘Did you touch him?’ Sometimes he has to keep his attention a little bit,” she said. “But he didn’t have to tonight. Cold Cash 123 is an end runner, and he’s a 440 horse. They say he can’t run 400, but he can.”
The Bays, who campaign in the name
of T Bill Stables Inc., sent Cold Cash 123 to California on Aug. 3 so that he could race at least once prior to the Dec. 15 Champion of Champions-G1. The Go Man Go fit well on the calendar, even though at 400 yards it was a little shorter than ideal for Cold Cash 123, who had won nine of 10 races at 440.
Dwayne “Sleepy” Gilbreath has trained Cold Cash 123 throughout his career in Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico, and he handed the gelding off to his friend Denny Ekins, who trains at Los Alamitos.
“Sleepy said that Denny took good care of his horses and that he knew it would work out,” said Carolyn Bay. “It was scary for me. Denny went to Ruidoso Downs to meet Cold Cash 123 before we sent him out here.”
Though Walt was not healthy enough to travel to Los Alamitos from the Bays’ home in Clare, Michigan, Carolyn made the trip for the Go Man Go. It was only her second visit to Los Alamitos and the first time the couple had started a horse at the track.
“This was a really important race,” said Ekins, “and the way Sleepy prepared him to perfection, I think this sets him up nicely for what’s coming up next.”
Next could be the Oct. 28 Robert
L. Boniface Los Alamitos Invitational Championship, though the Bays and Ekins might send Cold Cash 123 straight into the Champion of Champions. The gelding would have earned a Champion of Champions berth with his Go Man Go victory, but he didn’t need it because he already had one through his win in the May 27 Remington Park Invitational Championship-G1.
With the Go Man Go victory, Cold Cash 123 ran his current win streak to six, dating back nearly a year. He has captured 12 of 17 races lifetime and has earned $1,240,281. His
seven Grade 1 triumphs and eight total stakes wins include the 2011 Rainbow Derby
and The Championship at Sunland Park.
The Bays bred Cold Cash 123 in Michigan out of the placed mare Hot Cash 123.
He is the mare’s first winner from two Quarter Horse starters, but her first foal was Paint World Champion I Do One Two Three, a stakes winner who captured four Paint championship titles. Carolyn Bay said that Hot Cash 123 has three embryo transfers due next year, one by Oak Tree Special, the sire of Hot Cash 123, and two by FDD Dynasty.
Salvador Veliz’s Creston Goer (TR Dasher- Secret Goer) finished second for trainer Jose Moreno and jockey Cruz Mendez. Winner of the Kaweah Bar Stakes-G3 in April, Creston Goer had most recently finished second in
the Spencer Childers California Breeders Championship Handicap-RG1.
Senor Toby (Mighty Invictus-Micheles Alibi) ran third for jockey Oscar Peinado. Jaime Gomez trains the multiple stakes winner for breeder Brad Lohr and Daniel Reynoso.
Completing the field were Sparky E Boy (Hawkinson-YR Brown Lucy), Terrific Synergy (FDD Dynasty-Terrific Energy), Chivalry SR (Walk Thru Fire-Artesias Beduino), Shining First Dash (First Down Dash-Keep On Shining), Harems Last Dash (First Down Dash- Harems Choice), Twelve Stepper (Walk Thru Fire-Twelfth Secret), and Rylees Boy (Heza Motor Scooter-Pipistrelle), who was bumped repeatedly and had to check.
