FIrsT klas Fred
by John Moorehouse
First Klas Fred entered the Classic Chevrolet Heartbeat of America Stakes as the defending champion in that event, and the 5-year-old gelding’s
second act was even better. First Klas Fred went wire-to-wire to repeat in the $20,000 competition held Sept. 22 at Lone Star Park, completing the 350 yards in :17.187 to set a stakes record.
The AQHA Champion 2-Year-Old Gelding in 2009, First Klas Fred posted his seventh win in 24 lifetime starts. His five stakes wins include the 2009 Ruidoso Futurity-G1.
First Klas Fred broke on top from the four
gate, opening up a one-length lead by the time he entered the stretch and holding on to beat Executive Prince to the line by three-quarters of a length and collect a $12,600 payday for owners Denis and Julie Schoenhofer. He improved his bankroll to $569,084 and registered a career-high 105 speed index.
Jockey Luis Vivanco was aboard, as First Klas Fred posted his first win since Cindi Keeton took over as trainer about two months ago.
Jim and Marilyn Helzer bred First Klas Fred out of the unraced mare She Flies First Klas. She Flies First Klas has four starters from eight foals, with three winners. First Klas Fred is the only stakes win- ner, while This Snow Shows Klas is stakes placed.
Executive Prince (Executive Menace-Sticky N Picky) outnodded The Field Cricket (Lead The Field-Quick Lil Cricket) for second. Bennie and E. Teresa Jeter own Executive Prince, a Judd Kearl trainee ridden by Rodrigo Vallejo.
The Field Cricket is owned by Claud Denson and trained by Jesse Yoakum. Jerry Yoakum was aboard the 4-year-old gelding.
Sunny D (Okey Dokey Dale-Sweethearts Lady), Acorn (Oak Tree Special-Trio Gal TB) and Jump Down Azoom (Azoom-Jump Down First) completed the field.

Black Rosalita guaranteed that her connections would be in the black after the Sept. 22 card at Will Rogers Downs, winning the $21,200 Charlie
Claborn Memorial Stakes. The 3-year-old filly brought home an $11,838 prize for owner/breeders Dr. Francis Glowacki and L97 Trust, the first five- figure payday of her career, and one that improved Black Rosalita’s total earnings to $59,276.
Black Rosalita now has six wins in 18 lifetime outs, with two-thirds of those victories coming this season. The filly is 4-0-1 in nine starts thus far in her sophomore campaign and this marked her second straight win and first ever in stakes company. Last year she was seventh in the Cherokee Nation Stakes and sixth in the Black Gold 350 Futurity, and earlier this year, she ran eighth in the Speedhorse Derby-G3.
Trained by Luz Chavira, Black Rosalita drew the inside starting gate assignment in the Claborn. After the break, rider James Flores got the filly to kick it into gear about midway through the 400-yard race, and she successfully overtook Send Candy Power to reach the wire first by a head in :19.690.
Black Rosalita is the first stakes winner out of her dam, Poneta, a lightly-raced mare who has produced 10 foals, eight starters and five winners.
Send Candy Power (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Eye On The Candy), a 13-1 longshot, finished second for owner Carl Pevehouse. The Clinton Crawford trainee had jockey Tony Bennett in the irons. Chics Delight (Chicks Doit-Easy Hempen Chic) hit the board third under Mike Frederick. Dale Kolb trains the mare and co-owns her with Tina Kolb.
The remaining order of finish was Kissin Wave (Wave Carver-Whos Kissin Who), Famous Caillie (Dash Ta Fame-Capercaillie), Ms Lunar Streak (Streak And Dash-Ms Lunar Lark), Hi Ho Desirio (Desirio-Chasinthebigdream), and Delta Dance (Country Chicks Man-Olenes Gamble).
sequoyah P&a stakes
a day BeFore
by John Moorehouse
aDay Before got to the wire right on time to win the $16,600 Sequoyah Stakes for Paints and Appaloosas, held Sept. 28 at Will Rogers Downs.
A 7-year-old Appaloosa gelding owned by George Dennison, A Day Before logged his 10th win in 42 career outs. A Day Before now holds three stakes victories; he won last year’s Spots and Dots at Fair Meadows and the 2007 Strike It Rich OAR Futurity.
For the majority of the 870-yard Sequoyah, it looked as if Power Possum was going to win in a runaway. The filly quickly separated herself from the rest of the field and still led by daylight entering the stretch. Jockey G.R. Carter Jr. urged A Day Before to the lead and the veteran gelding reached the wire first by one length.
Trained by Clinton Crawford, A Day Before finished in :46.169, posting an 87 speed index, and banked a $9,638 payday that improved the gelding’s total bankroll to $86,726.
Jim Limbaugh bred A Day Before out of It’s Cash’s Perks, a lightly-raced mare who won two of four starts. As a broodmare, she’s produced six foals, all of whom have made starts. A Day Before is the only stakes winner in the brood, but siblings James Michael and The Day Before are stakes-placed.
Ray Enlow owns and trains runner-up Power Possum APHA (Little Jungle Jet-Streakin Possum). Mario Chavez drew the riding assignment. Jungle Jack APHA (Little Jungle Jet-Rainbows Dash) placed third. Matt Watkins is the owner and Pete Little the trainer. Benny Landeros was aboard.
The remaining order of finish was DSP Annies Flash APHA (SF Royal Quick Flash-Streakin Peacock), Moon Bully ApHC (Man With The Power-TB Fancy Moon), Dos Of Joe Watson APHA (Dos Poruno-Corona Perfect), Heather Royal APHA (SF Royal Quick-Heather Lane), and Jes A Dancer APHA (Jess Louisiana Blue-Dancietta).
