Juno’s request Handicap
CurlIe Cue
by Tracy Gantz
For a filly with an all-California pedigree, Curlie Cue took a circuitous route to the West Coast. Foaled in Maryland and sold in Oklahoma, Curlie
Cue now races at Los Alamitos, where she won the Sept. 29 Juno’s Request Handicap.
Off a step slowly in the 300-yard Juno’s Request, Curlie Cue quickly made up ground to get the lead. She just kept on going under jockey Gregorio Arriaga to win by three-quarters of a length in :15.303.
John Wells trains Curlie Cue for Tom Atwood, and the filly won two of four races last year at 2. In her first start this year, she finished third in a trial for the Governor’s Cup Derby-RG2.
Lucas Racing Inc. bred Curlie Cue and sold her
to Atwood Ranches Inc. for $17,000 at the 2010 Heritage Place Yearling Sale. Curlie Cue is out of the unraced Thoroughbred Girl In The Curl, who has five winners from 10 Quarter Horse starters, including 2006 Ruidoso Derby-G1 and Rainbow Derby-G1 third Real Good Man, and three winners from three Thoroughbred starters, including stakes-placed Devonairre. Girl In The Curl is a half-sister to 2005 Broodmare of the Year Runaway Wave, the dam of Champions Wave Carver and Ocean Runaway.
Steve Burns’ homebred Attack The Cartel (Corona Cartel-Separate Tac) finished second under Oscar Peinado for trainer Mike Casselman. The filly also ran second in the Adequan Los Alamitos Derby Challenge.
Tac Out (Check Him Out-Separate Tac), third in the California Breeders Debutante Stakes, ran third again with Cruz Mendez up. John Cooper trains her for Anna MacPherson.
Completing the field were Tac It To Heart
(Tac It Like A Man-Let’s Eat Lunch-TB), Better Be Good (TR Dasher-How Good), Does She Ever (TR Dasher-She Reigns), Nimble (Walk Thru Fire- Shrug), and Mai Corona (Corona Cartel-Babe On The Beach).
Far west Futurity

wild Beach made a splash in stakes competition on Sept. 30, going wire-to-wire to win the $24,700 Far West Futurity at Portland Meadows.
This marked the first stakes final for Wild Beach, who also qualified for the Idaho Cup Futurity in August at Les Bois but scratched. The victory by Juan Leon’s 2-year-old filly in the Far West shouldn’t come as a huge surprise; she entered the race as the fastest qualifier, and logged her fifth win in six career starts. All five of those wins have come in suc- cession since she finished second in her maiden out, a futurity trial at Sun Downs in April. This latest victory represented her biggest payday—a $9,880 sum that pushed her lifetime earnings to $15,045.
Wild Beach posted the quickest qualifying time, covering the 350 yards in :18.230, and showed even more speed in the futurity. The filly finished in :18.110 under jockey Troy Stillwell. Leon also trains Wild Beach, who broke on top from the six gate and opened up a one-length lead mid-stretch before going on to win by that same margin. Wild Beach’s dam, winner Wild N Single, has produced three foals, all of which are starters. Wild Beach is her first stakes winner.
Jess Be Hawkin (Fly Jess Fly-Livid) outnod- ded Sneakin Bye to secure runner-up honors. Jose Cancino Sanguino owns Jess Be Hawkin, a Juan Sanguino trainee ridden by Tad Skaggs. Sneakin Bye (Dashin Bye-Sneak Bac) is owned by Gary Chumbley and trained by Scott Raley. Deborah Hoonan did the riding.
The remaining order of finish was GC Streakin Okey (Okey Dokey Dale-Bedaub Adash), Shelbyjean (TR Dasher-Jazzing Pink), Flyin Lion (Panther Mountain-Flaming Cynthia), Picture Me Rolln (Fastnfierce-Mademoiselle Celeste), Mr Foxy Zoom (Foxy Tejon-Hope Too Zoom), and BG I Came
I Saw Iwon (First Thoughts-Antonios Shorts). Grammys Spitfire was scratched.
