A Regal Choice to Brazil
Grade 1 winner and multiple stakes sire
A Regal Choice si 101 (First Down Dash- Beduina, Beduino TB) will stand the 2012 Brazilian breeding season at Genetic Jump Ltda in Brazil. The 2001 stallion, who earned $735,507 on the track, joins his full brother, Champion Royal Quick Dash, at Genetic Jump Ltda., which is owned by Mario and Marilia Duarte. A Regal Choice is owned by Francisco Flores’ A Regal Choice Inc. He is the sire of 178 winners, 12 stakes winners, 23 stakes-placed runners and the earners of nearly $4 million from four crops to race, including Grade 2 winner Royal Proclamation.
First Prize Stone
First Prize Stone si 98 (Mr Jess Perry-First Prize Dash, Dash For Cash) will stand his first year at stud in 2012 at RM Racing Stables
in Utah. The 2008 sorrel stallion placed second in the Mr Master Bug Handicap and was a finalist in the Texas Classic Derby-G1. First Prize Stone is a sibling to eight stakes horses, including stakes winners First Prize Leesa si 106 ($488,270), First Carolina si
106 ($415,047), First Prize Robin si 103 ($295,147), Fast First Prize si 102 ($244,929), and Heza Fast Dash si 103 ($136,123). First Prize Stone is out of Broodmare of the Year/ AQHA Dam of Distinction First Prize Dash.
Jockey Ives Retires
Jockey William “Bill” Ives, 50, retired from racing following a victory aboard Wild N Wicked in the Beautiful Prairie Stakes at Hialeah Park on Jan. 1. Ives began riding in 1980, competed for 11 years, and then took a 17-year break while competing in rodeos and showing horses. He resumed riding in 2008. Among his most memorable horses are 2011 Hialeah Invitational winner Chi Ter and mul- tiple stakes winner Stone E Motion. Ives plans to return to his home in Washington.
Hoosier Invests $3 Million In OTB
Hoosier Park Racing & Casino in Anderson, Indiana, has invested $3 million
in a new off-track wagering facility designed
to attract more customers in downtown Indianapolis. The “Winner’s Circle Pub, Grille & OTB” offers 28 high-definition televisions, private dining areas, a Las Vegas-style race book with space for 160 people, and a VIP room for bettors.
Hialeah Sets Handle Record
Hialeah Park in Florida, set an all-sources mutual handle record of $381,751 on Dec. 24. The mark was $75,000 more than the previous record handle.
Los Alamitos Cancels Races Due To Fog
Los Alamitos on Dec. 30 cancelled six races due to heavy fog. Track management stated the most important thing was the safety of the riders and horses. The last time the Orange County track cancelled races due to fog was in November 2008.
Nate Shilabar “Hotshot” Dies
Top Barrel Horse for nine consecutive years Nate Shilabar, aka Hotshot, died Dec. 28 in Vinita, Oklahoma. The 24-year-old buckskin gelding was the decade’s top barrel horse. Earning more than $1 million, Hotshot was most recently owned by Garry Steinhoff,
and the majority of his money was won with Steinhoff’s daughter Tanya. Hotshot set
arena records at the Josey Junior World, the American West Regional at the Lazy E Arena, and at the NBHA Open World. He won the 1997 WPRA Rookie title, 2011 WPRA World Championship, two NBHA Open World
titles, three NBHA Youth titles, titles at the American West Finals, Mega and All-American Youth, as well as countless NBHA Regional titles. His owners say there will never be another Hotshot, although they do have his two-year-old clone Another Shot.
KHP Offers Low Cost Gelding Clinic
To help reduce the number of unwanted horses, the Kentucky Horse Park, in conjunc- tion with the Kentucky Horse Council’s Save Our Horses fund and the American Horse Council’s Unwanted Horse Coalition, will offer gelding surgery for $20 on March 10. The clinic is open to any horse owner who can’t afford the surgery, but horse owners must apply in advance. Up to 20 horses will be accepted. Raise A Jet APHA si 90 (Easy Jet Too-Kallista QH, Raise Your Glass TB) died due to compli- cations of old age at Southwest Stallion Station the last week of December 2011. The 1985 stallion is the eighth all-time leading Paint sire of money earners with over $1 million banked. A stakes winner in his own right, Raise A Jet
is the sire of 2-Time World Champion Texas Hero, World Champion Dashing Jet, and many other Champion Paint runners.
