Charger Bar Handicap-G2
DASH BACK PeRRy
by Tracy Gantz
Dash Back Perry made up for quite a few seconds and thirds when she captured the Jan. 8 Charger Bar Handicap-G2 at Los
Alamitos. It was her second consecutive stakes victory, following a win in the Nov. 26 Las Damas Handicap-G3.
“She’s been right on the verge, her whole career, of making a lot of
money,” said trainer Joe “Bear”
Bassett. “She’s just finally learn-
ing how to win. She’s figuring out how to get to the front and get it done.”
That’s exactly what Dash Back Perry did in the 400-yard Charger Bar. Breaking from the outside, she took the lead right out of the gate and proved too good for the rest. Sent away the 5-2 favorite, she won by an easy three-quarters of a length in :19.676.
“She started fine and was on
top and never looked back,” said jockey Saul Ramirez Jr. “She did win easier than last time.”
Not only did Dash Back Perry again have to meet Las Damas second and third finishers, Getit Together and KR Dragonfly, she had to spurn several other accomplished females.
“There were four or five mares that were not in the Las Damas that are simply fantastic mares,” said Bassett.
The field included Merial Distaff Challenge Championship-G1 winner Sheza Bad Habit and Fovee, a finalist in the Champion of Champions-G1. Rough starts compromised Fovee in the Champion of Champions and
the Charger Bar. Squeezed at the break in the Charger Bar, Fovee finished last.
Bassett said that while Dash Back Perry, now five, is slated to remain in training, “we’re going to give her a little breather.” She will likely go to Burns Ranch in California, where owner-breeder Johnny Trotter of Hereford, Texas, can get a couple of embryos from her. Bassett said that while definite plans had not been made, he thought she might be bred to such sires
as Walk Thru Fire and First Down Dash.
“She deserves great horses like that,” the trainer said.
With the Charger Bar victory, Dash Back Perry has now earned $212,039. She finished second in the 2011 Farnam Stakes and third in the 2010 Texas Classic Derby-G1 and Zia Park Championship-G1.
Trotter bred Dash Back Perry in Texas from Dash Back To Me, winner of the 1995
Rainbow Futurity-G1. Dash Back Perry is
the first of the mare’s six winners from eight starters to win a stakes. However, Dash Back Ocean finished fourth in the 2010 West Texas Futurity-G1, Jess Dash On ran fourth in the 2005 Rainbow Juvenile Invitational-RG3, and Cash Back To Me was a finalist in the 2001 All American Derby-G1.
Martha Wells’ homebred Getit Together (Separatist-Seronka) finished second to Dash Back Perry in the Charger Bar and the Las Damas. Cesar DeAlba rode her in both stakes for trainer Dan Francisco.
Fredaville (Mr Jess Perry-Fearless Freda), one of three in the field trained by Juan Aleman, was a neck behind Getit Together in third under jockey Francisco Rubio. Robert Gentry bred and owns Fredaville, who fin- ished second in the Merial Distaff Challenge Championship and was fifth in the Las Damas when a horse next to her in the gate lunged forward, resulting in a poor start for Fredaville.
Rounding out the field were Azshecanfly (Azyoucansee-PJ Flying Phoebe), KR Dragonfly (Separatist-Dreamers Wild Child), Onemoreglassofwine (Heza Fast Dash-
Fine Wines), Enjoy The Walk (Walk Thru Fire-Enjoy The Moment), Chalala (Chicks Beduino Jr-Kita Leader), Sheza Bad Habit (Looking For Chicks-Sheza Habit), and Fovee (Cuvee-TB-Fodice).
