Alfonso Patiño Martínez-Aceves Classic
HOW MUCH BETTER
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
With only five participants, the sev-
enth edition of this classic was held
in honor of the horseman Alfonso Patiño Martínez-Aceves. The race was for individu- als three years or older who participated in claiming races for $50,000 pesos or less from Jan. 1 to Nov. 3, 2019, and who also paid the corresponding nomination and registra- tion fee. The resulting purse was $181,000 pesos (approximately US $9,329), for the 300-yard event.
The group of veterans was headed by 9-year- old gelding How Much Better, who has a long track record in the United States. He debuted in Mexico on March 10, 2019, placing second and finishing third twice in five starts at the Hipodromo de las Américas.
The starting judge dispatched the race and immediately, next to the inner rail, the sorrel How Much Better (#1) stood out. With the assistance of his rider, Martín Hernández Bautista, they defended their leadership throughout the race. They bravely endured the siege of Carters Fantasy (#4) and Cuautla (#2), leaving them in second and third place respectively. When review- ing the race, the judges disqualified Cuautla from third place, for having interfered
with Huge Heart (#3) in the final yards, promoting Huge Heart to third.
How Much Better finished the distance in :15.57 (SI 81), to the approval of the Cuadra Tiburon and trainer Saúl Pérez Robredo. This was his seventh triumph in 30 starts, from which he has also obtained six seconds and six third places, and total earnings of $665,084 pesos (approximately $35,000 US).
The gelding is by TR Dasher and out of How Good, by Bono Jazz, and was bred in the United States by Edward C. Allred.
Representing the family of the late Alfonso Patiño Martínez-Aceves was Daniel Hernández Mandujano (MVZ), who presented the trophy to the winning team.
Under the direction of the international rider Paul Osvaldo Rodríguez, the gelding Carters Fantasy (Carters Cartel-Shes No Fantasy) took second place for Cuadra JABA and trainer Javier Rodríguez Hinojosa.
The mare Huge Heart (Metallic Lion- Backin) was promoted to third place, led by Oscar Cervantes as helmsman. She belongs to La Esperanza Farm and was saddled by Fernando Figueroa Romero.
Cuautla (Maquiavelo- Catalina Peace) was disquali- fied from third to fourth place, while Chepina Teller (Teller Tango-Chepina Holland) closed the race in fifth place.
