$3-million All American Futurity-G1, Magical Jess also finished second as the fastest quali- fier in the 300-yard $71,013 Desert Classic Futurity at Turf Paradise. And, he was third iin the Ruidoso Juvenile Invitational as well.
“He broke a little slow, but he closed the gap,” stated jockey Leos of Magical Jess after the Ruidoso Derby. Leos also rode the gelding in his trial.
Magical Jess’ dam, the Red Hot Rhythm mare Magic And Rhythm, won three stakes at Los Alamitos in 2003, including the Governor’s Cup Derby-RG1 for California-bred sopho- mores, and she was a qualifier to that season’s
Los Alamitos Derby-G1 but was scratched out of the final. The homebred mare has foaled
six winners from eight starters, including La Dulce Vita, a full sister to Magical Jess who ran third in last year’s Golden State Juvenile Stakes. Magical Jess is the top earner and first stakes winner in the brood.
Paragon Farms’ High Plains Perry (Mr Jess Perry-Sky Chicks) finished third and was rid- den by Ricky Ramirez, who rode all of Wood’s Ruidoso Derby qualifiers. A $100,000 buy
at the 2015 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale, the brown gelding has earned $535,780 from seven races in New Mexico and Texas, including
his Ruidoso Derby trial for the fourth fastest qualifying time and a win in the Texas Classic Futurity-G1 in which Tough To Bee finished third as was previously mentioned.
