John Lionel Soileau Sr. passed away at the age of 81. Soileau was the owner of JLS Speed Horse Ranch Inc., John L. Soileau Inc. catering company, and Soileau’s IGA. He was a lifetime member of the American Quarter Horse Association and the Louisiana Quarter Horse Breeders Association. Soileau was the breeder/owner of 2010 Champion 2-Year-Old Gelding JLS Mr Bigtime. He was awarded the 2009 LQHBA Lifetime Achievement Award, 2010 and 2014 LQHBA Breeder of the Year award, and 2016 Hall of Fame owner.

Alfred Joseph Fontenot Sr. of Raywood, Texas, passed away at the age of 79. Alfred was a race horse trainer for over 50 years, conditioning horses such as 1972 Champion 3-Year-Old Filly Alamitos Angel and 1983 Champion Aged Stallion Johnny Vittoro.

The LQHBA scholarship program, which is designed to provide financial aid for students, presented five scholarships totaling $11,000 at Evangeline Downs following the fifth race. Since its inception in 2001, over $500,000 has been earmarked for the program to provided financial aid for students.

The 146-night 2017 Los Alamitos meet came
to an end, with the new 2018 year-long meet starting Dec. 29. The 2017 meet leaders included: Leading Quarter Horse Owner Ed Allred; Leading Quarter Horse Trainer Paul Jones, who earned the award for the 19th time in the last 20 years after; Leading Trainer by Money Earned Jaime Gomez; and Leading Quarter Horse Rider Jesus Rios Ayala, who scored his first riding title.

The Oklahoma Horse Racing Commission and
the Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin have adopted Emergency Rules dealing with Medication and Substance Thresholds. There are substantive changes both in medication levels, which now closely mirror the ARCI model rules, and prohibited treatments, penalties, etc. The changes are designed to make Oklahoma’s permitted medications uniform
with the other states that have adopted ARCI model medication rules. There are also changes to eliminate potential loopholes and increase the ability of the OHRC to enforce its rules.

Evangeline Downs 2017 meet leaders were announced: the Co-Leading Owners were Robert Touchet and Jose O. Barron; Kenny Roberts was the Leading Trainer; and Everado Rodriguez was named Leading Jockey.
The Quarter Horse Benevolent Charitable Foundation and Los Alamitos Race Course owner and CEO Dr. Edward Allred have each donated $25,000 and F. Jack Liebau, the vice president of the Los Alamitos Racing Association, has donated $10,000 for a total of $60,000 to the relief efforts for the Lilac fire that swept through the San Luis Rey training center in Bonsall, California.

Quarter Horse owner/breeder and former California Horse Racing Board member John Sperry passed away at the age of 81. Sperry owned race horses for more than 35 years, including his biggest star Grade 1 winner Jess Good Reason as well as Champion sire Stel Corona. Since 1990, his Quarter Horses have earned over $1.6 million.
