Five youth competed to earn scholarships worth a total of $6,000 at the All American Quarter Horse Youth Association National Youth Racing Experience finals in an all- expense paid trip to Prairie Meadows Race Course. The winners were determined from the cumulative score of the application, online Racing Skillathon, including an essay and an onsite interview. The $3,000 top prize went to Claire Lee of Texas.

Hall of Fame jockey Charlie “Choo Choo” Smith passed away. Charlie first became a jockey in 1957 and was the only one to ever ride 1963 World Champion Jet Deck. The legendary jockey won more than 800 races and was the nation’s leading Quarter Horse rider six times and the leading rider at Los Alamitos 11 times. He was inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame in 2005.

In a repeat of 2016, riders Rolando Pina and Berkley Packer completed the Indiana Grand season as co-leading jockeys. Pina ended the season with more earnings, while Packer had more top three places. Trainer Randy Smith secured his third consecutive leading trainer title and became the track’s all-time leading Quarter Horse trainer. Tony Cunningham was the leading owner for the second consecutive year.

The sale of Ruidoso Downs and its Billy
The Kid Casino and Ruidoso Horse Sale Company closed. The new owners are Stan Sigman, John Andreini, Narciso “Chicho” Flores and Johnny Trotter. The new ownership group is named All American Ruidoso
Downs, LLC (AARD) and All American Ruidoso Horse Sales, LLC (AARHS).
Their mission is to ensure the integrity
of Ruidoso Downs’ racing and to create a level playing field for all horses, trainers and owners.
Longtime horseman Jack McReynolds, 86, passed. McReynolds worked for the 6666 Ranch, for Briarwood Farms, and as a trainer for 11 years. He and several others started the horse breeding ranch Oklahoma Stud in 1974, standing such stallions as Double Bid, Tiny Charger, and Alamitos Bar. He was instrumental in starting the Kansas and Texas HBPA, served on the OQHRA Board of Directors, and was
a lifetime member of the AQHA. McReynolds and his wife Marilyn were inducted into the Oklahoma Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 2014.
