Héctor Roldán Espinosa Classic
N SURE
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
On Dec. 10, the 5th running of the 330-yard race held in honor of horse- man Héctor Roldán Espinosa was held. Seven
Mexican bred horses three years and older participated for a prize of $233,400 pesos (approximately $12,329 US).
The black filly N Sure previously won the Select Auction Derby on Aug. 28, 2016, and was second in the Mexican Breeders Derby on Oct. 16, 2016, and later underwent surgery days after that race. She came back to race on May 28, 2017.
This time, N Sure dominated RD Native (#7), who ran in front a good part of the way. In the final strides, equally challenging were Lafishingonabugsmoon (#1) and favorite Dancer Fishers (#5). However, N Sure showed off her experience and class to overcome RD Native, with the support of rider Francisco Javier Fernández. They completed the race in :16.45 for a 93 speed index, making their run very close to the outer rail.
Bred by Salvador Oñate Ascensio, the 4-year-old filly is owned by Cuadra San Antonio AJH and trained by José Ravel Baltazar Aguilar at the facilities of the Hipódromo de las Américas. The filly is by Native Cartel and out of Sure Alibi (by Sir
Alibi), both of which are owned by her breeder. N Sure now has a record of 10-5-1 from
25 outs with earnings already close to 1.9 mil-
lion pesos. Among her most notable successes include the Arcadio Espinosa
Classic and the Mexican
Breeders Futurity during her
first season as a runner. This race has been
previously won by the likes of Sambaso Chic (2013), SF Banker Assault (2014), Espejo Samurai (2015) and Senor Cawboy (2016).
The award was presented
by Héctor Roldán Arreola,
who represented his late
father and who has faith-
fully followed the tradition
of breeder and owner of fast
Quarter Horses at his Rancho Santa Fe in the State of Hidalgo.
“My grandfather stood out more as an owner than as a breeder,” said Roberto Roldán, grandson of Mr. Héctor Roldán Espinosa. From his stable, H.R.E., many notable individuals have passed by such as Kisses To Yawl, a son of By Yawl, in turn a descendant
of Dash For Cash, who won 13 classics, a record number to date at the Hipódromo de las Américas, where a classic is contested that bears his name. Also, through his cuadra ran
Shake The Bank (by Bully Bullion), where as a runner she had remarkable achieve- ments, such as second place in the All American Futurity in 1995, earning her the title of Champion 2-Year-Old Filly by the AQHA.
“This mare left by my grandfather is a fundamental part of the genetics that we currently have in Rancho Santa Fe, as well as the stallion Simple Assault (by Chicks Beduino) that was also brought here by him,”
said Roberto Roldán, a young man who still follows the tradition and taste for racing horses with enthusiasm.
In second was the sorrel filly RD Native (Native Cartel-Red Gucci Shoes) under Teodoro D. Vergara for owner Cuadra Las Palmas and trainer Víctor Hugo Ruiz Carapia.
In third place was Lafishingonabugsmoon
