Cold Cash 123 was named 2011 World Champion. The Jockeys’ Guild honored Jacky Martin, who was paralyzed in a spill in 2011, with an outstanding achievement to the Quarter Horse industry award that will be henceforth named in his honor. Breeder/owner Ronnie Stewart was elected president of the Texas Quarter Horse Association.
The U.S. House of Representatives Committee
on Transportation and Infrastructure upheld the ban on transporting horses in double-deck trailers. The Oklahoma Horse Racing Commission amended a rule making all Clenbuterol other
than FDA approved Ventipulmin or Aeropulmin in their original package illegal to possess or use
on the track at all state tracks. A New York Times investigative article painted a disturbing picture
of the horse racing industry and sparked calls for more regulation. New Mexico expands out-of- competition testing. The California Horse Racing Board developed an equine injury prevention program for trainers, veterinarians and other licensees. The California Senate Committee on Governmental Organization approved a bill to established a fund for the rehabilitation of retired racehorses by inmates in correctional facilities. The California Horse Racing Board voted to suspend authorization for clenbuterol at all racetracks for
all breeds. Boyd Gaming, the parent company
of Delta Downs, purchased Evangeline Downs. Federal authorities implemented a multi-faceted raid at several ranches and racetracks in Oklahoma, New Mexico, Texas and California, arresting 7 individuals in connection with money laundering from the sale of drugs by the Los Zetas drug
cartel. The Federation Equestrian International, the international governing body for several equestrian sports and Olympic disciplines,
ruled that cloned horses could compete in FEI competitions. The organization Racing Free was formed to reward owners for racing their horses free of drugs. R.D. Hubbard announced that drug offenders would be ejected from Ruidoso Downs private property. The Downs at Albuquerque enacted tough policy directed at trainers accused
of doping. The FDA approved ReBalance, a medication for the treatment of Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis (EPM). The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Agricultural Disaster Assistance Act to provide assistance to livestock producers impacted by drought. One Dashing Eagle was named 2012 World Champion. The Northern Racing QH Association honored Abigail Kawananakoa with the Dick Monahan Lifetime Achievement Award, their highest honor. Remington Park announced that no horseman on the AQHA suspended list or who had unresolved positive test issues would be allotted stalls or be allowed to participate in the meet. The New Mexico Racing Commission received extra funding to
