which was the best race he had run. We were real pleased just to get in. He run the best race of his life and he still run second, so I didn’t think he could outrun these horses. There were three or four in here that looked like they were better than him. But tonight he run the race
of his life. He got even better. He just really stepped up to the plate tonight and said, hey, I am a good horse!”
Stel My Corona broke his maiden in his third start, was subsequently gelded, and returned to finish a troubled seventh in the California Breeders Freshman Stakes on July 28. That was his last race before the PCQHRA Breeders’ Futurity trials on Sept. 15.
“I think gelding him really helped him a lot. He wasn’t quite running like we wanted and like we thought he could. He wasn’t quite 100% paying attention,” Jones said. “We thought it would make him a better racehorse, and I think it really helped him.”
Stel My Corona ran second to fastest quali- fier Far Niente in the trials, setting the third- fastest qualifying time of :17.526. His winning time of :17.498 in the finals earned him a speed index of 89 and $160,440 of the total purse. He will have a chance at an even bigger payday later this year, as he is eligible for the Nov. 25 Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity trials.
Trainer Paul Jones with his wife Marin and daughters Mia and Allie, jockey Rodrigo Aceves, and Molly and Tony Doughtie accept the trophy from Ron Hartley.
Jr Dynasty Mountain, also a trial win-
ner and the second-fastest qualifier, finished second in the finals under jockey Osvaldo Macias. Joe Bassett trains Jr Dynasty Mountain (FDD Dynasty-Prissy B Panther) for owner J R Stables. This was the colt’s first stakes appear- ance after winning four of five starts.
Far Niente (FDD Dynasty-Shahayla) was third for lessees Tom Atwood and Vessels Stallion Farm LLC. John Wells trains the colt,
who won three of four prior starts.
The top three were followed by Blistering Speed (Tres Seis-Meddlin Mischief), Tahma
Hawk Chop (Swingin Jess-Tahma Hawk), Slightys Mac A Tac (Tac It Like A Man-Slighty Ice), Joy Roses Eagle SA (One Famous Eagle- Gather The Roses), Fireworks (Walk Thru Fire-Workslikacharm-TB), Significant Heart (Corona Cartel-Jess Significant), and Blackberry Czech (Corona Czech-RA Noble).

by Tracy Gantz
Five runners from the Sept. 16 He Flys Handicap returned for the Oct. 5 Blane Schvaneveldt Handicap, which was
restricted to horses from the Intermountain and Northwest states. They met three new- comers, but the result remained the same— Lil Bitts A Dash added the Schvaneveldt to
Lil Bitts A Dash was making his second attempt to win the Schvaneveldt. Shipping in from Idaho, the gelding last year as a 3-year- old finished fifth in the stakes.
“We didn’t have to rush him this year,” said owner David Newbold. “We learned a little bit from last year.”
Lin Melton trains Lil Bitts A Dash at Los Alamitos. Jake Newbold, David’s son, trains
him in Idaho. Lil Bitts A Dash has also won the 2011 Bitterroot Derby and finished third in the 2010 Bitterroot Futurity-RG2.
Bred in Utah by Patterson Livestock, Lil Bitts A Dash is out of unraced A Lil Bitts. Lil Bitts A Dash is the mare’s first winner from two starters.
A Royal Dervish (Royal Miracle Dip-Three Royal Roses), ridden by Never Marin, came off a victory
in the Bank of America Emerald Downs Championship Challenge. Kurt Calton trains the 7-year-old gelding for Bob and Scott Giltner. A Royal Dervish finished third in last year’s Schvaneveldt.
Susan Hadley bred third-place SH Cowboy Baby (Dashair-FLH Separation) with Sherman Hadley and owns the gelding with Diane Perkins. Jordan Hadley rode him in the Schvaneveldt as well as to third in this year’s Sweetwater Derby, when they were moved up to second on a disqualification.
Completing the field were Blue Piranha (Fishers Dash-My Blueberry Chick), RTM Say Your Prayers (Chickie Cherry Cola-Shirleys Secret), Sissis Little Nipper (Mountains Majesty-Sissy Road), Classic Blush (A Classic Dash-A Royal Blush), and R Chump Change (Cashin Man-Jewel Cartel).
his earlier victory in the He Los Alamitos.
Lil Bitts A Dash and jockey Francisco Rubio did it the same way they did in the He Flys, leading throughout. They had a bit more real estate, stretching out to 400 yards from the 350 yards of the He Flys. Favored Lil Bitts A Dash zipped to the front, and while A Royal Dervish made a gallant effort to catch him, Lil Bitts A Dash held him off to win by a half- length in a time of :19.796.
