Hobbs America Futurity-G2
A DReAM to ReMeMBeR
by Tracy Gantz
ADream To Remember lived up to her bloodlines when she captured the
Oct. 7 Hobbs America Futurity-G2 at Zia Park. Not only is she by Corona Cartel, always among the leading sires, she is out of Hallowed Dreams. That Thoroughbred mare won her first 16 races to equal a modern-day record of consecutive victories also held at the time by champions Citation and Cigar.
“The filly has had talent all along,” said Lisa Saumell, who handles the New Mexico division of Paul Jones’ stable.
Champion jockey G.R. Carter Jr. piloted A Dream To Remember in the Hobbs Futurity. Saumell said that Carter liked the youngster from the first time he saw her.
“He came to our schooling races,” Saumell said. “The jockeys get on a lot of horses, and they mark down the ones they like. She was G.R.’s top pick.”
A little hard to saddle initially, A Dream To Remember responded to Saumell’s early lessons.
“This mare’s babies are a little hot,” said Saumell. “This filly is a little bit of a hot num- ber, but she is maturing at just the right time.” A Dream To Remember’s temperament reminds Saumell of another filly, Runnning Brook Gal, who won the All American Futurity-G1 for Jones in 2009.
“You have to meet these fillies in the mid- dle and make things their idea,” said Saumell.
A Dream To Remember had learned her lessons perfectly for the Hobbs Futurity trials and finals. She won her trial by a neck to qualify sixth in :19.507 for the 400 yards, and she improved in the final.
“G.R. came into the paddock and said, ‘We’re going to win this one,’” Saumell said.
The jockey proved correct. Breaking
well from post four, A Dream To Remember avoided a little bit of trouble to her outside. Hombre De La Noche hopped at the start
and had to alter course inside of A Dream To Remember after Simpatico Vision from post six outbroke him and then veered in. A Dream To Remember spurted to a good lead about midway through the race and won by three- quarters of a length in :19.330.
Saumell noted that Carter didn’t have to urge the filly at the finish, saying, “You don’t get into them if they’re running good.”
The Futurity capped a super weekend for the Jones barn. The champion trainer also won the Hobbs America Derby-G3 with Jess Featureme
Quick and the PCQHRA Breeders’ Futurity-G2 at Los Alamitos with Stel My Corona.
A Dream To Remember was winning her first stakes in the Hobbs Futurity. She broke her maiden in winning her trial for the All American Futurity, “but the winds had shifted
and she wasn’t fast enough to qualify,” Saumell said. Instead, the filly finished third in the All American Juvenile.
R.D. Hubbard, head of
Ruidoso Downs, owns A
Dream To Remember with
Johnny Cope and Henry
Southway. Saumell said that
Shaun Hubbard, R.D.’s grandson and the general manager of Ruidoso, selected the filly after seeing her at the Lazy E Ranch.
Gerald Libersat bred A Dream To Remember. Lazy E Ranch consigned her to the 2011 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale, where R.D. Hubbard purchased her for $80,000. The dam, Hallowed Dreams, won 25 of her 30 starts, including 17 stakes, and earned $740,144. She never raced beyond six furlongs. Before she began producing Quarter Horse foals, Hallowed Dreams had five Thoroughbreds, all winners. Though none won or placed in stakes, Grand Rade earned $123,124.
A Dream To Remember is one of three 2010 foals for Hallowed Dreams, the mare’s first Quarter Horses. One other, Ms Katyln Dreams
by Carters Cartel, also competed in the All American trials, finishing sixth in her heat.
Ms Katyln Dreams became a winner in her Hobbs Futurity trial, but didn’t qualify for the final.
Whiteface Eagle (One Famous Eagle-Sing And Pray) finished second under Ramon Sanchez. Jaime Aldavaz Jr. trains the filly for the Mexas Racing Team. Favored in the final, Whiteface Eagle had won three races and finished second once in four starts.
K H Logax Inc.’s home- bred Fastpass Regard (Chicks Regard-Gambeleta Caine) ran third for jockey
Jaime Leos and trainer Juan Gonzalez. Second to Simpatico Vision in his trial and the fourth- fastest qualifier, Fastpass Regard ran second in the All American Juvenile.
Fastest-qualifier and second-choice Sashay Hot (Walk Thru Fire-Salty Shay), also trained by Jones, came home fourth, followed by Simpatico Vision (Visionarian-Daring Deception), Ramblin Mountain (Panther Mountain-Sheza Ramblin Too), Le Viahn (Carters Cartel-Real Blue Eyes), My Mighty Sam (Mighty Invictus-My Sweet Sammie), Orions Shootin Star (Dashin Bye-Orions Dream), and Hombre De La Noche (Corona Cartel-La Reina De La Noche).
