Stan Webb won his share of stakes while training on the Alberta, Canada, circuit. His charges included 2009 Canadian Champion Six Pack Of Corona as well as multiple stakes win- ner Its All About Speed. Webb moved his stable to Ontario this year and captured the richest race of his career, with ZZ Dynasty in the $168,773 Ontario Jackpot Derby at Fort Erie. Just before the gate opened, ZZ Dynasty started to get restless. However, regular rider Scott Sterr settled her down immediately, and she made a picture-perfect start to grab the early lead.
“She got away from the gate really good,” said Webb. “She needed to do that because it was the best field she ever faced.”
Leanintoit, winner of the Merial Fort Erie Distaff Challenge, went off as the 6-5 favorite. The field also included All Canadian Derby winner The FDD Map, Princess Stakes Derby winner Famous Aunt Jesse, and Ontario Sires Stakes Derby winner Wranglin Gump. With that kind of competition, ZZ Dynasty was the second-longest shot of the field at nearly 33-1.
She didn’t run like a longshot. After the start, three horses challenged ZZ Dynasty for the lead, and she gamely stood her ground in a tough battle.
“I think her best distance is 300 or 350 yards,” said the trainer. “She’s a good-looking, well-bred filly. She can be kind of hyper and get wound up at the races, but she’s calm at home. We’ll probably bring her back on this circuit next year.”
Paul Taylor Jr. and Paul Taylor III bred ZZ Dynasty in New Mexico from Zip Zima, who finished second in the 2000 Rise N High Handicap. The mare has produced five winners from seven start-
ers, including Zimalue, who won the 2009 Par A Dice Stakes and placed in the 2008 Retama Park Futurity-G1
and two other graded stakes. The second dam, West Texas Derby winner Zipp Zoro, foaled stakes winners Zipuino, Zip Dash, Fodice, Zoro Jet, and Lazbuddie.
Craig Spada trains second-place Heros Valiant Lark (Valiant Hero-Thermolark Miss) and owns him with Peter Spada. Marty Mercieca rode the gelding, who also finished
second in the Maple Leaf Derby.
The FDD Map (FDD Dynasty-On The
Map) and JJ Maxwell (Planetary-Stars Special) dead-heated for third. John McInerney
piloted The FDD Map for owner Les Baker and trainer Lee Baker, and the gelding has
won four races since they claimed him for $5,000. Ivy Lane Racing’s JJ Maxwell finished third in the All Canadian Derby. Danielle DiBert rode the gelding for trainer Renee Wilson in the Jackpot Derby.
Completing the field were Leanintoit (Tres Seis- First Lady Amber), Famous Aunt Jesse (Jesse James Jr-Famous Aunt Martha), BG Ivory Jane (Ivory James-Beautiful Royalty), Wranglin Gump (Eye Dash-
Wranglin Reba), FF Chick Magnet (Chicks Regard-Rippin Dash), and Kissmystarrydash (Star Fire Dash-Strawfly Fortune). North Of Carolina, Ourfirstorphan, and Paint It Black were scratched.

“She came on again at the end,” said Webb.
Heros Valiant Lark stuck the closest, and it took a photo to separate them. ZZ Dynasty emerged the victress by a nose in :18.100 for the 350 yards. She paid $67.50 to win.
Tom Bennie owns ZZ Dynasty, and Webb took over the filly’s training earlier this year. To that point she had not won in six attempts, though she finished second in the 2011 Manitoba Speed Horse Futurity.
Webb initially started
ZZ Dynasty in a 250-yard maiden race at Ajax Downs on May 20. The race worked as a confidence-builder. She broke her maiden by a half- length and then reeled off two seconds, another victory, and a third before a couple of losses at 400 yards.
ZZ Dynasty (#8) wins the $168,773 Ontario Jackpot Derby by a nose with jockey Scott Sterr aboard at Fort Erie Racetrack.
