Refrigerator Handicap-G1
CHARAl kID
by John Moorehouse
Charal Kid keeps piling up the stakes wins. With a victory in the $75,000 Refrigerator Handicap-G1 on Oct. 6 at Lone Star Park, the
Malinche Cattle Company’s gelding collected his 17th win in 44 starts. Thirteen of those triumphs have come in stakes company, and six of those were in graded stakes races. Charal Kid also holds 11 additional in-the-money finishes in stakes events.
The 6-year-old gelding’s effort in the Refrigerator marked his third straight win, and the $41,250 payday improved his career earnings to $456,360. The gelding has a chance to add another handsome sum
to that bankroll thanks to this victory, which secured Charal Kid a spot in the $750,000 Champion Of Champions-G1 at Los Alamitos in December.
A Eusevio Huitron trainee, Charal Kid had to battle for all 440 yards to attain this latest victory. After breaking from the five gate, Charal Kid quickly grabbed the lead, opening a one-length advantage by the first call. Mr Truly Uno came on strong to chal- lenge Charal Kid, who still had enough left in the tank to reach the wire first by a head.
Santos Carrizales was aboard for the victorious trip, completed in :21.323 for a 97 speed index.
The Malinche Cattle Company also bred Charal Kid and owns his dam, The Special Feature. The 1998 mare competed in one graded stakes while posting a 1-2-2 record in 10 lifetime outs. The Special Feature has eight foals, two of which have made starts, but Charal Kid is the only winner.
Mr Truly Uno (Feature
Mr Jess-Truley Yours) placed second for Sally Box. Trained by Esteban Rubio, the 5-year-old gelding had Roy Baldillez in the irons.
Priceless Feature (Feature Mr Jess-Southern Price), Charal Kid’s top challenger for most
of the race, finished in third. The 3-year-
old gelding is owned by Ed Melzer and was trained by Eddie D. Willis. Jimmy Brooks drew the riding assignment.
The remaining order of finish in the Refrigerator Handicap was JLS Mr Bigtime (Bigtime Favorite-Psalmist), DM Streakn Thru Fire (Walk Thru Fire-Sashay N Six), Prospect To The Top (Coronas Prospect-Cream To The Top), Dale N James (Okey Dokey Dale-Sweet Jessica James), Chi Ter (Granite Lake-This Chicks Stylish), Royal D Corona (Corona Caliente-Royal De Elegance) and Im The Key (Shazoom-Royal Classic Chick).

wicked Courage had flashed plenty of potential in his young career, hit-
ting the board in five of his six appearances racing competitively in trials for the Grade
1 Ruidoso, Rainbow and All American Futurities. The Texas-bred son of freshman stallion Captain Courage delivered on that promise in the Black Gold 350 Futurity on Oct. 7 at Will Rogers Downs, defeating eight rivals in winning his stakes
debut at odds of 3-5 under Cody Jensen.
Bred by Burnett Ranches LLC and owned by Andrew Smith, Wicked Courage broke his maiden in the trials for the stakes event recording the second-fastest qualifying time in his initial try over the Will Rogers Downs surface for trainer Luis Villafranco.
