  Stallion Futurity (Futurity Garañones)
Bonny HoRSe
by Luis Prieto Zamudio • translation by Eduardo Silveyra
on Friday June 29 trial races were held in order to qualify to the Stallion Futurity-RG3 final, with the participation
of 139 colts and fillies of Mexican breeding which were presented at the Select Auction in 2011. The 10 best times returned to the track at the Hipodromo de Las
Americas on July 22 to com- pete for a prize of 2,995,684 pesos ($221,900 U.S.), at distance of 300 yards.
Qualifying to the final
with the eighth fastest time
(15.44 seconds), Bonny Horse,
a beautiful chestnut colt
owned by State of Mexico rac-
ing block Cuadra A.B., seemed
to have little opportunity to
seize the glory that comes
with winning a classic and
the corresponding financial
reward. At least that was what was reflected in the odds, which ranked Bonny Horse the seventh choice in the wagering. The favorites were Mango Sambaso, El Rey Misterio, Horse Gamble, Dash N Fun, SDE Aguerrido Bank and Henrywais, in that order, all them with better qualifying times than “Bonny,” as he is called in racing block.
When talking about horse races, there
is no small rival on the race track, even if it seems that way. That day Bonny Horse and rider Moises Molina, who was entrusted for a second time riding, showed just that. The duo led the race from starting gate nine and took full advantage of the open track to cross the finish line a half-length in front of Dash N Fun. His time was 15.36 seconds, for a speed index of 94.
In the winner’s circle there was an immedi- ate crowd headed by the young owner José Alcántara Osornio and his family and friends. They welcomed the winning horse and rider, and received the statue, trophy, and horse rider shirt, in recognition of the meritorious victory in part by the Mexican Association of Quarter Horses, A.C.
Very excited, Pepe Alcantara, the owner of the racing block Cuadra A.B. (initials for the surnames Alcantara Bastida) and owner of the winning horse, said: “My family has always been involved with horses, especially in charreria (Mexico’s national sport, sharing similarities with that of an American rodeo). This is the first foal from the auction that comes into my hands, and to be honest, his
performance surprised me because he was
the best out of 139 applicants, all of them of great quality, each representing very pres- tigious racing blocks in Mexico. I am very happy with him and the work that my team has been developing, made up of young dedicated
enthusiasts and scholars, in which I also include the rider Moises Molina, who was a key player in being able to qualify and take the horse’s final triumph.”
When asked about Bonny’s future plans, he said Bonny Horse is nominated for the Select Auction and Mexican Breeders futurities, where he will participate if he is in good physical condition.
“We must give him all the possible opportunities, but always ensuring his welfare. For the time
being I am very pleased with what has been accomplished, beyond the financial rewards,” added Alcantara, who earned 1,467,885 pesos ($108,730 U.S.) for the win.
Bonny Horse was bred by Mr. Salome Gallegos, in Ciudad Cuauhtemoc, State of Chihuahua. He is from the second crop of Sea Horse Corona, a full brother to Carters Cartel, 2007 AQHA 2-Year-Old Champion. From his first crop he produced Corona Devil, which in 2011 was second in both the Stallion Futurity and Select Auction Futurity, with earnings
of $94,181 U.S. Bonny Horse is the fourth foal and first stakes winner produced by Wee Thing Bonny, a daughter of Devon Lane-TB, which in 14 starts was second five times and third twice with earnings of $8,589 U.S. She was a finalist in the Kansas Jackpot Derby.
The filly Dash N Fun (Dashs Secrets- Secret To Fun) came in second for racing block Cuadra San Luis Aculco and rider Eduardo Valenzuela. She was saddled by Ismael Ayala.
A half-length behind her came Ima Zevi (Ima Trackmaster-Elegant Zevi), property of the Sinaloa racing block Cuadra La Presita, under the leadership of Nicolas Otamendi and saddled by Alfredo Martinez Mora.
The remaining order of finish was SDE Aguerrido Bank (Aguerrido-Beduina Toast Bank), winner of the consolation of the Mexico Futurity; Henrywais (Holland Henry- Azalways); Marea Roja (Jesstified-Will Be Winning); Horse Gamble (Sea Horse Corona- Perla Gamble); To Liberty (Separatist Jr-To
Chickuma); El Rey Misterio (Jess Call Me Doc-Jurys Out); Mango Sambaso (Sambaso Dancer-Mango Mist).
