Hoosier Park Classic
FIlleMuP PHIl
by John Moorehouse
Fillemup Phil has been a fixture on the stakes-race circuit in Indiana, winning the 2010 Blue River Derby and finishing in the
top three in every stakes appearance since then. He found his way to the winner’s circle again on Oct. 13 in the $106,800 Hoosier Park Classic Hoosier Park.
A 5-year-old gelding, Fillemup Phil charged to his 11th victory in 24 career outs, and his second stakes win.
He has finished in the top
three in 20 of 23 starts,
including a second-place
effort in the 2012 Bob
Woodard Memorial Classic
and thirds in the 2011 Bob
Woodard, Hoosier Park
Classic and Sterlie Bertram
Memorial Stakes.
After posting the top qual- ifying time in trials for this year’s Hoosier Park Classic, covering the 400 yards in
:20.122, Fillemup Phil also showed speed in
the stakes final. He grabbed the lead by the first call, pulling away from his would-be
rivals from there to sport a one-length margin as he crossed the finish line. Fillemup Phil com- pleted the trip in :20.292 under Oscar Delgado.
Danny Lang trains Fillemup Phil, who brought home a $58,740 payday for owner Brian Gunder and has now earned $272,691 in his
career. Guy Trolinger bred Fillemup Phil, the only stakes winner out of his dam, Miss Reminice. A 1992 mare with 12 offspring, Miss Reminice has eight winners from 11 starters.
Three of the competitors in the Hoosier Classic field, including Fillemup Phil, went off at odds of less than 4-1. Those three topped the fin- ishing order. Lovemelikethat (Likenothinyoueversaw-First Smart Stride) posted his
fourth consecutive runner-up finish for owner Cooter Daniel. The John McCreary trainee was ridden by Shanley Jackson.
Air Born Leader (Leader Of The Class-Air Born Jazz) also hit the board, and the third- place share of the purse pushed his lifetime bankroll over the $250,000 milestone for owner/breeder Randy Thompson. Thomas Mosley Jr. is the trainer and Gerardo Garrido was aboard.
Eyes Got Hope (Mr Eye Opener-Hope For Me Too), Oceans Tidalwave (Ocean Runaway- Masnini Moon), Shawne Bay (Brookstone Bay-Lucks Got It), Indy Power (Brimmerton- Invisible Power), Gypsy Effort (Call Me Together-Cajun Style), Rarely A Suspect (Ausual Suspect-Sheza Rarity) and Big Brown Dash (Scrutinizer-Twaynas Luck) completed the field.

Sterlie Bertram Memorial Stakes
HeZA DooR PRIZe
by John Moorehouse
Heza Door Prize went into the Sterlie Bertram Memorial Stakes with only two previous outs on his career record. The lightly-
raced 3-year-old gelding obviously had fresh legs. When the gates opened, he made a strong run over the 350 yards to snatch victory in the $111,100 stakes on Oct. 13 at Hoosier Park.
Owned by Alberto Valadez, Heza Door Prize logged his second win and first in stakes company in the inaugural
stakes out of his career. The
first-place share of the purse,
a sum of $61,105, increased
his bankroll to $64,943.
This victory shouldn’t come as a complete surprise despite Heza Door Prize’s relative lack of seasoning. The gelding did post the fastest time in trials for the Bertram, traversing the 350 yards in :17.911. The Jorge Gonzalez trainee was not

quite that quick in the stakes itself, finishing in :18.190, but Heza Door Prize was running into a 10 mile-per-hour headwind.
Heza Door Prize actually got off to a rather slow start from the fifth hole, but quickly began to gain ground underneath rider Cesar Carrilo. He steadily caught up
to Dezenzo, the early leader, and challenger Successful Dash. All three horses hit the wire
together, and the photo indi- cated Heza Door Prize made it to the line first by a head over Successful Dash.
Heath Taylor bred both Heza Door Prize and his dam, Rectitude, a 2004 mare owned by Diana Moster. Rectitude posted one win in eight outs and was a final-
ist in the 2006 Oklahoma Juvenile Challenge-G3. Two of Rectitude’s three foals have made starts, and Heza Door
Prize is the first stakes winner.
Successful Dash (Cartel Success-Rita Anns
Dash), the co-favorite, finished second as his three-race win streak ended. The gelding is owned by Randy Thompson, trained by Thomas Mosley Jr. and was ridden by Gerardo Garrido.
Dezenzo (Ivory James-Hooked On Laveaux) placed third for owner/trainer Randy Smith. Victor Olivo drew the riding assignment.
The remaining order of finish was U B Crawlin (The Crawfish-Queen Of The Saga), Will You Perry Me (Dashing Val-Streakin Keep Sake), Dancing With Ducks (Ausual Suspect-Hard Luck Duck), Princess Royal Blew (Royal Blue Chew Chew-Kittens Line), Its Chilly (Chilled Corona-Lucks Got It), Shak Em Down Stoney (SC Chiseled In Stone- Royal Mergana) and Chilled Patrona (Chilled Corona-Barbi Quick Dash).
