CAnDy CARtel
by Michael Compton
Safe to Say, Candy Cartel is a win machine. Her latest victory, at the expense of seven rivals in the $55,180 Lubbock Stakes-G3 on Oct. 7 at Zia Park, was her ninth win from 18 career starts and her fourth in a stakes event. Under regular pilot Tony Bennett, Candy Cartel wasted little time establishing her supe- riority in the Lubbock. Although she broke in third position, she quickly assumed command and opened a one-length
advantage on her nearest pur- suer Abra Cadabraa. Candy Cartel maintained that lead to the wire, stopping the timer for the 400 yards in :19.381 as the 9-5 favorite.
Bred and owned by Carl Pevehouse of Ratliff City, Oklahoma, Candy Cartel has now earned $189,721. In addition to the Lubbock, she won last year’s Fort
Erie Derby and this year’s

Decketta Stakes-G3 at Remington Park, as well as the Fair Meadows Belles Stakes. She is conditioned by Clinton Crawford.
Candy Cartel has had every right to be a top runner. Her dam, This Candys Special, was a multiple Grade 3 winner during her racing career. All told, she won eight of 31 and earned $108,821. Like Candy Cartel, This Candys Special is a Pevehouse homebred.
This Candys Special
has proved her worth as
a broodmare, producing graded stakes-placed Stole The Candy; Jess Special Candy, winner in track-record time in the 2011 American Congress Maturity at Beulah, and victorious in the Indiana Downs Classic Stakes at Indiana Downs this year; and additional graded stakes- placed runners Jess A Candy Gal, Send Me Candy Paint
and Special Candy Paint. Her progeny have earned $624,656.
Abra Cadabraa (Feature Mr Jess-Shes a Magic Juan) secured the place spot in the Lubbock under Jaime Leos for trainer Harvey Baeza and owners A and F Racing LLC, John Argoitia and M.S. Fotou. KR Dragonfly (Separatist-Dreamers Wild Child), the defend- ing Lubbock champion, finished third under Salvador Martinez. Michael Joiner saddled the filly for Dave and Sally Kid.
Reporting home behind the top three
were Arethas Main Feature (Feature Mr Jess-Arethas Song), Miss Supersonic Dash (Sweet First Down-Super Sonic Six), Little Bit Southern (Southern Corona-Averys Little Bit), Vanil On Ice (FDD Dynasty-Got Alota Nitro) and Jesiacountrychick (Country Chicks Man- Miss Jess Rogue).
