Making her first official start in two months, Carris Cartel overcame a slight stumble at the break to win the $131,300
AQHA John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship-G2 at Prairie Meadows on Oct. 14.
Carris Cartel went 350 yards on a sloppy and sealed track in :17.500
under jockey Santos
Carrizales, and she earned a
lifetime-best 97 speed index. The $59,085 winner’s
share pushed the filly’s earnings to $92,504. Carris Cartel is owned and bred
by Nancy Carrizales of Harlingen, Texas, the wife of the jockey. Edelmiro Carrizales, the brother of the jockey, prepped the home- bred brown filly.
“She has a big heart, and tonight she showed me she’s the real thing,” said Santos Carrizales. “There were some good horses on both sides of us, and she ran them down and dominated them.”
Carris Cartel is one of three winners and two stakes winners from three starters foaled by
stakes-placed Shesa Wicked Gypsy. Raced in Texas, New Mexico, and Iowa, Carris Cartel has won two of four starts, including the May 20, John Deere Sam Houston Juvenile Challenge-G3.
JD Wagon Boss (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Elly Mae) ran second, a neck behind Carris Cartel, for owners Buckey and Beverly Stockwell. Jose Rocha rode the colt for trainer Buckey Stockwell.
George and Peggy Cobb’s Apollitical Approach (Apollitical Jess-Panther Not A Kitty) finished third. Cesar Gomez rode the homebred gelding for trainer John Hammes.
Tempting Annee GL (Tempting Dash- Grande Annee), the 17-10 favorite, finished fourth and was followed by CM Boom Shakalaka (Carters Cartel-Mi Fames A Dandy), Syms TLC (The Louisiana Cartel- Symphonic), High Valley Girl (Valiant Hero-Huckleberry Mojito), SC Vapor Trail (Corona Cartel-Spit Curl Diva), Feature

Dauns First Desirio, racing for Rogelio Carbajal Santos, handled a sloppy and sealed track with skill, as he sprinted to a nose
victory in the $180,000 AQHA Adequan Derby Challenge Championship-G3 at Prairie Meadows on Oct. 14.
Ridden by Cesar Gomez for trainer Julio Corral, Dauns First Desirio covered 400 yards in :19.397 and recorded a career-
best 102 speed index. The
$82,800 winner’s share of the
purse pushed his earnings to
$126,885.
“I had plenty of horse,” Gomez said. “He’s been leav- ing the gate like a rocket the last couple of outs, so I knew we were going to get out of there pretty good.”
Dauns First Desirio was bred by in Texas by Dan & Jolene Urschel out of lightly
raced First Daun Express. She has produced 9 winners from 10 starters. Dauns First Desirio is her first stakes winner and top earner.
Corral, 20, was earning his second graded stakes victory as a trainer. In 2016, the
young conditioner won the Bank of America Remington Park Champ. Chal.-G2 with Im Beau Brown.
“I got my license as soon as I could when I was 18,” he said. “I love horses and this is what I’d planned to do for a while, so I thought I would start early. My dad is a trainer, and we’ve been in racing a long time.”
Dauns First Desirio has won 5 of 12 starts, including a win in this year’s Smoky Hill Stakes at Arapahoe Park & a 2nd place finish in the Arapahoe Park Derby on Aug. 12.
John G. Johnson’s Faster Than Hasta (Hasta Be Fast-Leadmetoyourladder) was 2nd under Alfredo Triana Jr. for trainer Robert Johnson. Kowboy Jim (FDD Dynasty- Counting On Youx) ran 3rd under Oscar Delgado for owner/trainer Dean Frey.
