Alfredo Castro Rea Classic
AZOOMIN JAMIE
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
There were 31 United States-bred two-year-old runners who started in the four qualifying races of this still new classic on Sept. 10 at 350 yards. Those who obtained the 10 best times returned to the finals on the Sept. 30 to determine the best in the contest, which had a total purse of $1,384,800 pesos (approximately US $76,096).
The list was headed by the sorrel colt One Danny with:17.274, followed by Runaway For First with :17.342, so these two were chosen as favorites to win. In the last position of the ranking was the filly Azoomin Jamie with :17.881, far from the leaders but with the best overall race record.
The race was clean from the start. Azoomin Jamie had the necessary space to start her rapid movement forward, which seemed to be inter- rupted at about 150 yards when she hesitated and drifted inward. But Moisés González gave her the confidence and impulse necessary to recover, reach and surpass Cold Be Trayal
(#4) and Tinys Famous (#5), who near the inside rail were leading the race. It was with 1/2-length of difference over the latter that Azoomin Jamie finished the 350 yards with
a time of :17.31 for a 96 speed index over a
muddy track. It was a substantial improvement over her speed in her trial.
Azoomin Jamie, out of Azoomin With Jessie by Azoom, is a grey filly bred in
the United States by Bobby D. Cox and acquired at the Heritage Place Yearling Sale in Oklahoma for $10,700 by the San Lázaro de Arará Cuadra. In her six
starts at the Hipódromo
de las Americas, Azoomin
Jamie has a record of three
first places, counting the The Prize Classic and now the Alfredo Castro Rea Classic.
To those is added a second
place in the John Deere
Mexico Juvenile Challenge.
She was saddled by trainer Leonilo Cruz García and led
by Moises González García,
her regular rider, who on the same day also triumphed
with Jaguaryu and Inspirato
in two Mexican Breeders classics.
For this triumph, Azoomin Jamie added to her account $581,616 pesos ($31,960 US
approximately), reaching a seven-digit earnings figure in Mexican pesos.
The trophy was handed over to the team of the San Lázaro de Arará Cuadra, headed by the grandson and great-grandchild of the honoree, Alfredo Castro Rea, originally from the State of Coahuila, who as a resident of
the state of Tabasco founded Rancho Santa Elena for the upkeep and competition of fast Quarter Horses.
The sorrel filly Tinys Famous (One Famous Eagle
- Tiny First Effort) seized sec- ond place under the direction of Arturo Romero for Cuadra Par de Aces and trainer Victor Hugo Ramirez Moreno. His time was :17.38.
In third place was Cold Be Trayal (This Cartel Is Cold - Intentional Deception) with Yair Daniel Báez at the
reins for owner Rancho Tres Delgadillo and trainer Armando Paulino Montiel López. They covered the distance in :17.48.
