The photo on page 171 shows 1962 World Champion, Champion Mare, Champion Aged Mare, and 1958 Champion Three-Year-Old Filly No Butt winning the 1962 Miss Princess Invitational Handicap at Los Alamitos. No Butt, who was bred by Guy R. Corpe of Corpe Ranch, Inc. in Sacramento, California, was born in 1955.
No Butt raced for owner Guy Purinton. The filly began her career on the track at two and raced until eight years of age. In those seven years, No Butt made an incredible 103 starts, winning 29 races (13 stakes), finishing second 15 times (9 stakes), and third 14 times (9 stakes). She won stakes races at Los Alamitos, Bay Meadows, Fairplex Park and Ruidoso Downs. She equaled the 350-yard track records at Bay Meadows and Fresno and finished her race career with $63,882 – quite an amount in those days.
No Butt’s pedigree may seem a bit humble at first glance. She was sired by Joe Less and out of Red Bottom by Barney Owens. However, Joe Less was by Joe Moore, by Little Joe, who was the foundation sire for renowned Quarter Horse breeder Ott Adams. Little Joe was by the Thoroughbred Traveler, a well-known racehorse and sire of racehorses. Traveler, whose pedigree is unknown, was a much sought after line for Quarter Horse racing and he can be found
in many of today’s bloodlines. No Butt’s dam was sired by Barney Owens, by Jack McCue,
by the famous Quarter Horse foundation sire Peter McCue. And, No Butt’s dam was out of Sunkist, by prominent Quarter Horse stallion Plaudit, who was by the Thoroughbred King Plaudit by Plaudit.
World Champion No Butt went on to produce 100% winners/ROM earners from four starters, but no stakes runners. Her winning daughter More Cause, however, did produce two stakes winners.
“Nobody ever gave No Butt anything, yet with heart and guts and foretop flying . . . she whipped the best any stable could throw at her,” stated Nelson C. Nye in a 1971 issue of Speedhorse.
“The weaker sex prevailed and the male fell beneath the fury of his mate as No Butt broke from a pack of 25 potential Champions to walk off with the title,” read the Quarter Running Horse Chart Book after No Butt was named 1962 World Champion.
