2016 Record: 9-6(3)-2(1)-0, $1,721,507, All American F.-G1, SW Juv. Champ.-G1, Sunland Park Winter Juv. Invit., 2nd W. Tx. F.-G2
Imperial Eagle made his presence known in New Mexico, winning stakes at Ruidoso Downs, Zia Park, and Sunland Park. But, it was his performance in the All American Futurity-G1 that clinched his chances for Champion 2 Year Old and Champion 2-Year-Old Gelding.
“He’s a very special horse for a very special man,” said trainer Tony Sedillo.
Sedillo trains Imperial Eagle for 83-year-old owner Chuck Robinson, whose health kept him from seeing his horse in person during much of the year. However, Robinson and a friend drove for three days from his home in North Carolina to witness Imperial Eagle’s All American win.
“Winning the race was like a dream come true,” Robinson said a few days after the victory.
Fredda Draper bred Imperial Eagle in California from the mare Jenuine Joy, who earned $382,230 and won five stakes. Sedillo found the youngster for Robinson at the 2015 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale for $48,000.
“He picked out the horse and handled
the bidding—I wasn’t there,” said Robinson. “Based on the record, I think he did a good job. I would take his advice on any purchase I intended to make.”
Leading up to the All American, Imperial Eagle finished second in his trial and final of the West Texas Futurity-G2 at Sunland Park. While he won his trial for the Ruidoso Futurity-G1 and Rainbow Futurity-G1, he didn’t qualify for either final.
That changed with his All American trial. Imperial Eagle qualified the fastest from both days of trials and then took the final by a neck with Esgar Ramirez aboard.
“I didn’t realize the extent of the support
for that race until I actually was there,” said Robinson. “It was a great opportunity to go and watch it.”
Imperial Eagle wasn’t finished, though. On Dec. 4, he scored by a length in the Southwest Juvenile Championship Stakes-G1 at Zia Park. Then, on the final day of 2016, he added the Sunland Park Winter Juvenile Invitational, winning by a nose.
With six wins and two seconds in nine starts, Imperial Eagle earned $1,721,507, the most of any Quarter Horse in 2016.
