A Revenant accomplished a substantial amount in a very short time. His brilliance in a four-race campaign resulted in a trophy as Champion 2-Year-Old Colt.
Michael Joiner trained A Revenant for R.D. Hubbard, Johnny Cope, Ray Willis, and Butch Southway. Juliana Hawn Holt bred A Revenant in Oklahoma from the mare Thewayouwantmetoo, winner of the 2004 Rainbow Futurity.
“He was a nice colt to break,” said Joiner, who noted that with each race, A Revenant got “a little bit more professional.” The colt made all four of his starts at Ruidoso Downs, winning two trials and the rich Rainbow Futurity-G1 and finishing second in the Ruidoso Futurity-G1.
Cody Jensen piloted A Revenant in all
four starts. In his Ruidoso Futurity trial, A Revenant broke ninth, dueled for the lead with Apollitical Scout, and won by a length as the favorite. He qualified as the second-fastest of the first day of trials.
In the final, A Revenant ran second, losing by only a head to Apolltical Chad.
“He didn’t break the sharpest in the Ruidoso Futurity,” said Joiner. “It was just greenness. He made a big run in the last 50 yards.”
A Revenant broke very well in his trial for the Rainbow Futurity. He won easily by a length as the 2-5 favorite, and his time of :19.812 for 400 yards was the fastest of both days of trials.
Breaking from post nine in the Rainbow final upon one scratch, A Revenant dueled with Paint My Pilot. A Revenant spurted
away in the final yards for a neck victory. He bettered his trial, stopping the timer in :19.708 as the 9-10 favorite.
“He always has a big, strong finish,” said Joiner, “and that’s where he won the race, the last 100 yards.”
A Revanant’s connections scratched him from his trial in the All American Futurity-G1 because they felt he wasn’t 100% and would not be able to perform at his best. He later underwent surgery for knee chips, and hopefully he can return for an even better campaign as a 3 year old. In his four starts, he earned $604,800.
