The closest EC Jet One came to losing throughout 2016 was in the South Florida Derby.
“The big colt on the outside got in a lot of trouble,” said Judd Kearl, who trains EC Jet One for owner-breeder Enrique Carrion.
The trouble occurred at the start of the race. Genovese in post eight drifted out, impeding Favored Fire in post nine and EC Jet One in post 10.
“He had to make up a lot of ground,” said Kearl.
EC Jet One made up that ground to dead heat for the victory with another Kearl trainee, the filly Carters Sixty Six.
It was the only time EC Jet One had to share the glory, as he went through his 3-year-old season undefeated, including the big one, the All American Derby-G1.
The victories culminated in EC Jet One being voted Champion 3 Year Old and Champion 3-Year-Old Colt.
Prior to the South Florida Derby, EC Jet One began his 3-year-old year with the trial and final to the Hialeah Derby, the trial actually his final start at 2 because it was held on Dec. 27.
In the trial, EC Jet One again suffered a bump at the start, but he managed to win it by a neck. That same margin determined the final, with favored EC Jet One defeating Tee Chic.
Following the South Florida trial and final, EC Jet One received time off. Kearl wanted him fresh for the All American Derby.
EC Jet One qualified to the All American with a length triumph in his trial as the 7-5 favorite. He was the second-fastest qualifier behind still another talented horse in Kearl’s barn, the filly Volcom Bay.
Kearl qualified four to the final, and EC Jet One prove best, coming on strongly to win by a half-length as the 5-2 favorite over Celtic Emblem.
EC Jet One, dubbed “Gorilla” at Kearl’s barn because of his size, is a gentle soul who loves nothing better than receiving attention, especially from Carrion’s grandchildren.
Carrion bred the colt in Texas from the Mr Jess Perry mare Pretty Girl Perry.
