Champion 3-Year-Old Filly
Breeder: P. K. Thomas
Owners: Bennie & Teresa Jeter
Trainer: Judd S. Kearl
Jockeys: Esgar Ramirez, Rodrigo Vallejo
2016 Record: 7-2-1(1)-1, $392,744, 2nd Ruidoso D.-G1, 4th All American D.-G1
Bennie and Teresa Jeter have such faith
in trainer Judd Kearl that when Kearl called Bennie from the 2014 Heritage Place Yearling Sale to say he had bought the Jeters a horse, Bennie was happy to pay $43,000 for her.
“He just told me to send the money in for her,” Jeter recalled. “I asked him how much, and it kind of shocked me a little bit. But, it was the best value I have ever had in horse racing.”
That filly, Volcom Bay, has turned out to be “one of the best fillies or mares we’ve ever owned,” said Jeter.
Volcom Bay has now earned nearly 10 times the Jeters’ investment, and she has been voted Champion 3-Year-Old Filly of 2016.
Kearl took Volcom Bay to Florida to start her 3-year-old season at Hialeah.
From there she went to Sam Houston before heading for Ruidoso, where she blossomed.
Kearl put her into the trials for the Ruidoso Derby-G1, and she not only won her trial to qualify, she did it in the fastest time of :19.618 for 400 yards. She left favored Ferarri GT 2 1/2 lengths behind her.
In the final, Volcom Bay had to face a tough field that included Jess Good Candy, winner of the 2015 All American Futurity-G1 and that year’s Champion 2 Year Old and Champion 2-Year-Old Colt.
Jess Good Candy went off as the 3-5 favorite, with Volcom Bay the 4-1 second choice of the field.
Volcom Bay battled Jess Good Candy, and though she couldn’t catch him, she finished second, a neck ahead of Apollitical OK.
The filly kept qualifying for the big dances, next winning her trial for the rich All American Derby-G1. Again she qualified the fastest, completing 440 yards in :21.189.
In the final she was part of the Superfecta that included three horses trained by Kearl. EC Jet One, Celtic Emblem, and Volcom Bay, all from the same barn, finished first, second, and fourth.
P. K. Thomas bred Volcom Bay in Oklahoma from the Chicks Beduino mare Miss Lethal. The mare has also produced stakes winners Lethal Delight and Lethal Perry.
