Mile High Futurity
TYSON GAY
by Michael Cusortelli
Second-fastest qualifier Tyson Gay kept his perfect record in tact at 4-for-4 following his 3/4-length victory in the $115,300 Mile High Futurity at Arapahoe Park on August 12. Ridden by Eddie Aceves for owner David
J. Sanchez and trainer Jose Antonio Moreno, Tyson Gay covered 400 yards in :19.610 and recorded a lifetime-best 101 speed index while racing against a reported 10-mph head wind.
The $46,120 winner’s share of the $115,300 purse increased the California-bred gelding’s earnings to $65,739.
Tyson Gay was sent to post as the 1-2 favor- ite in the full field of 10 as he was coming off of a clear 3 1/4-length victory in one of the five Mile High Futurity trials on July 27.
Raced in Arizona and Colorado, Tyson Gay has won all four of his outs, including the April 29, 300-yard AQRA Spring Fling Futurity at Turf Paradise in Phoenix.
The gelding returned a $3 win mutuel in the Mile High Futurity, and he teamed with fastest qualifier and 7-2 second choice Midnite Dash for a $2 exacta payoff of $7.
The gelding was bred by Steve Burns
DVM whose recent homebreds include Little Talks, the winner of the 2015 Golden State Million Futurity-G1 at Los Alamitos, and 2017 Oklahoma Derby-G3 winner Myst Fit.
Tyson Gay is one of seven winners from 10 starters produced by Hawk Kue Pie, a homebred who won the 2010 Las Damas Handicap-G2
for fillies and mares at Los Alamitos in her final career start.
The gelding is a half-
brother to two graded
stakes-placed runners:
Militarist, the runner-up in
2016 Golden State Derby-G2
at Los Alamitos, and You Caught My Eye, who ran third in the July 28 Governor’s Cup Futurity-RG2 at Los Alamitos.
Tyson Gay’s second dam, the winning 17-year-old Chicks Beduino mare Kool Kue Chick, is a half-sister to two-time Champion Aged Mare Kool Kue Baby.
Midnite Dash (Bodacious Dash-DG Sumit) was prepped by Hipolito Michel-Valverde
for owners Pedro and Lilia Andazola. Sergio Dominguez rode the Colorado-bred gelding, who banked the $23,060 runner-up share of the purse to bring his earnings to $28,760 from three starts, all at Arapahoe Park.
Slayer (High Rate Of Return-Shiv Katall), an 11-1 longshot, ran third under
Edwuin Lujan. A $12,000 purchase at last year’s Heritage Place Yearling Sale in Oklahoma City, the gelding earned $13,836 for his owner Manuel Almanza Jr. and trainer Manuel Almanza.
Logans Favorite (Favorite Cartel-Logans Dash), Invite A Favor (Favorite Cartel- Inviting A Snow), Capos Sassy Laaydee (Capo De
Capi-Royaldashlaaydee), One Two (One Sweet Jess-Im Haylee Two), Beyond Speed (FDD Dynasty-Hermes For Me B), Moshi Yoshi (Pool-Mairis Money Maker) and Aint She Kool (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Purdy Kool) completed the order of finish.
The richest Quarter Horse race at Arapahoe Park, the Mile High Futurity
was first contested in 1950 at Kremmling, Colorado, when it was known as the Rocky Mountain Quarter Horse Association Futurity. It was run at Centennial Park at Littleton, Colorado, from 1951-59 and 1961- 83, and it also has been run at La Mesa Park at Raton, New Mexico (1960) and Pikes Peak Meadows at Fountain, Colorado (1984).
