SUENOS DINEROS

One of the first futurities to run this spring was the $230,132 West Texas Futurity-G2 at Sunland Park on April 15.
Suenos Dineros was the fastest qualifier after a dominant performance in the March 24 trials. He went wire-to-wire in the fourth of nine trials, exploding late to finish 3/4-length in front and clocking in at :15.215 for his first official start.
In the $230,132 Grade 2 West Texas Futurity finals, the gelding broke clean from the 9-post and regular rider Jose Enriquez let him gather himself and line out for the first hundred yards before driving to the finish.
The duo reached the wire a neck in front of the rest, stopping the timer at :15.290 to earn an 88 speed index.
Suenos Dineros is undefeated from the first two starts of his young career and the $108,163 winner’s share of the purse boosted his cumulative earnings to $113,503.
Suenos Dineros is owned by Victor Lozano, who also had one other horse in the finals, fourth placed Phantom Fury. Shae Cox trains both horses for Lozano.
Suenos Dineros was bred in Texas by Eugene Therwhanger out of the lightly raced mare Tres Suenos, who earned her ROM on the track. Suenos Dineros is her first foal.
Shae Cox was transpar- ent when it came time to talk about Suenos Dineros’s performance on the track.
“We are fortunate to have this horse,” she stated. “He is a great big horse and he has the personality to match. This guy has a heart to run and he gives it up every time he is asked.
“His schooling races were
not that impressive,” Cox
continued about the gelding. “In fact, he was outworked by his stablemates.
“Suenos Dineros is a good gate horse. In the trials, he got away great and pulled up really good and was ready when the finals rolled around. He made the finals with the fastest time.”
The trainer had much to say about jockey Jose Enriquez, as well.
“Jose (Enriquez) qualified three horses to the finals and picked Suenos Dineros to ride, which was the best decision,” Cox admitted.
“Jose is a great person along with being a great rider. He fits our program well and he is a hard worker. And he shows up every day to gallop.
“Jose knows horses well, especially our horses. Suenos Dineros is a tough horse to gallop and Jose is equal to the task.
“We always send him with a pony because he is so tough,” Cox said about Suenos Dineros.
“Victor Lozano bought Dineros from breeder Eugene Therwhanger, and we are glad to have him in our barn,” the
conditioner said.
“Groom Osvaldo Trejo really takes good
care of him and the two of them seem to be buddies. They just kinda hang out at times.”
Looking ahead, Cox added, “We are look- ing to the future for this big guy. We are very concerned not to be hard on him because he is so big and he runs so hard. Right now, he is sound and we want to keep him that way.
“We are looking to Ruidoso this summer, specifically the All American Futurity trials. We think this horse is the kind that can make the grade there. As far as the other futurities at Ruidoso, we will play it by ear always deciding in the best interest of the horse.”
Mountain Holme (Gone To The Mountain-Quick Way Holme) broke out under jockey Ruben Calderon, who had to concentrate on maintaining a straight course. They put together a good rally and were
able to get the second place check for owner Eduardo J. Lugo and trainer Jimmy Guerra. The filly won her March 24 trial heat to the West Texas Futurity finals by a nose and quali- fied second.
Following in third place of the photo finish was JM Katyln (Christmas Cheer-Ms Katyln Dreams). Her team includes owner J&M Racing and Farm and trainer Jose Ramirez
Sr. Manuel Gutierrez was in the irons for this race. The filly finished second in her trial heat to Mountain Holme to qualify third.
Phantom Fury (One Sweet Jess-SR Gizella) finished fourth and was followed by Rosicky (Tee Cos-Jess Lookin), Final Down (Carters Cartel-Down Bac), Eagles Tenaya (One Famous Eagle-Lady Tenaya), Famous Corona Miss (Fantastic Corona Jr-Famous Easter Lady), Presteejess (Mr Jess Perry- Kpax) and Mr Perrys Tres Seis (Tres Seis-Mr Perrys Wine).
