                                Enrique Carrión Álvarez Classic
LAFISHINGONABUGSMOON
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
The first version of this race in honor of lawyer Enrique Carrión Álvarez was con- tested on March 26 at the Hipódromo de las Americas. The race was for three-year-olds and older horses born in Mexico that had never won an added money race at a distance of 350 yards for a prize of $280,400 pesos (approxi- mately $14,767 US).
There were 10 entered who fulfilled the conditions and whose owners paid the respec- tive registration fee, a fundamental part of the prize. The favorite of the fans to win the race was the dapple grey Lafishigonabugsmoon, whose name, although long and difficult, is already familiar to the fans for his recurring participation in the finals of futurities and derbies, which is also reflected in his statistics. SF Gotta Assault Be Champ was the next best option for the win, backed by a record of three wins from six starts.
In the initial yards of the race, the filly Ferrari Black Girl looked as if she was about to fall and knock down her rider and this was noted. Although this did not affect the other runners, she was left with no chance to appear as a strong competitor. It was the aforemen- tioned Lafishingonabugsmoon (#4) who, after
overcoming a hesitant start, soon became the leader of the group. He remained on top until the wire, well escorted by SF Assault Be Champ (#7) and The Cucus Jess (#9), individuals that in the final yards dominated over One Cartel (#2).
Well ridden for the first
time by Moisés González
García, the four-year-old
grey crossed the line of the
350 yards in:17.18 for a 99 speed index, 1 1/2-lengths in front of SF Assault Be Champ.
Trained by Ruben Romo Garcia, Lafishingonabugsmoon is a four-year-old geld- ing raised by Ramiro González Ozuna. With
a reward of $168,240 pesos (approximately $8,860 US), the gelding has reached the winner’s circle three wins in 17 starts for his Cuadra Los Gavilanes. Lafishingonabugsmoon is the son of the stallion Nofishinonafullmoon out of the mare A Special Lady Bug (for My Mr Special Bug).
Enrique Carrión Álvarez, accompanied by his son Enrique Carrión Carrillo and Adriana
Gómez Barnola, Manager of the Quarter Mile Mexican Association (AMCM), led the ceremony of awarding the winning horse and owner Cuadra Los Gavilanes.
Enrique Carrión has a long and successful career
as a breeder and owner of sprinters, both in Mexico and the United States. A lawyer by profession but a horseman at heart, Carrión stands out
in his record as the breeder and owner of 2016 Champion Three Year Old/Champion Three- Year Old Colt EC Jet One, by The Louisiana Cartel out of Pretty Girl Perry, who remained undefeated in his second season in the United States, accumulating earnings of $1.37 mil- lion, a main product of the triumphs in the All American Derby-G1, Hialeah Derby, and South Florida Derby. He is currently in service as a stallion.
Another formidable racer Carrión owns is the current stallion Azoom (Shazoom- Crystalinas), who in his only season on the track (2004) accumulated $738,136 winning
Hipodromo de las Americas $14,767 • 350 yards :17.18 • si 99
