Swift Stakes
eYeSA WeSTeRn
by John Moorehouse
Eyesa Western went into the gates 49 times without registering a stakes win. For the veteran seven-year-old gelding, the 50th out was charmed. Owned and trained by Anireal Chavira, Eyesa Western caught Charal Kid in the final yards to win the $15,000 Swift Stakes on Jan. 28 at Louisiana Downs, collecting his eighth victory in 50 starts. Eyesa Western held two prior runner-up finishes in stakes, including the Harrah’s Dash on Jan. 7.
Eyesa Western got jostled a bit coming out of
the gates but still established himself as one of the contenders. Meanwhile, Charal Kid got to the front of the nine-horse field from the inside post. Jockey Bobby Ransom successfully urged Eyesa Western to catch Charal Kid by a neck at the wire.
Making his first out at 350 yards since June of 2010, Eyesa Western covered the distance in :17.635. The victory reaped a $9,000 payday and improved Eyesa Western’s total earnings to $90,834.
Eyesa Western is the only foal out of Western Debt. Burnett Ranches Ltd. bred Eyesa Western and owns his dam, who is out of Champion Down With Debt. Charal Kid (Streakin La Jolla-The Special Feature) finished a close second for Malinche Cattle Company. Eusevio Huitron prepped the gelding, who was ridden by Santos Carrizales. It marked
the 35th time in 38 starts that Charal Kid has finished the money. Ja Jess Perfect (Mr Jess Perry-Ja Curiosity) took third by a neck. Judd Kearl trains for owner Joe Allen. Rodrigo Vallejo rode.
Abreez (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Jos Wild Rose), Kool Country Man (Country Chicks Man-First Kool Baby), Bertha Venation (Corona Caliente- Dash To Glory), Mr Hempens Feature (Feature
Mr Jess-Hempeness), King Of The Bunnys (King Of The Mall-Ms High Flyin Bunny) and Point Of Deception (Feature Mr Jess-Daring Deception) completed the field.
Tallahassee Stakes
iVORY RAin
by Stacy Pigott
Ivory Rain went from the ranks of claimer in Louisiana to stakes winner in Florida with a wire- to-wire victory in the $22,375 Tallahassee Stakes on Jan. 29 at Hialeah Park.
Aliuska Gonzalez and trainer Eddy Ferreiro tagged Ivory Rain for $5,000 on Nov. 3 at Evangeline Downs. Since then, the gelding won a $10,000 claiming race, and most recently ran fourth in the Biscayne Stakes on Jan. 8.
Miguel Martinez was in the saddle for both of those starts and again stepped aboard Ivory Rain in the Tallahassee. Breaking from post position eight
in the nine-horse field, Ivory Rain sprinted to the lead and led every step of the 250 yards. Ivory Rain earned his first stakes win with a neck victory in the Tallahassee at odds of 12-1. He has now won three of nine starts and $28,477.
Bred by Keith Renfro, Ivory Rain is a half- brother to stakes-placed winner Hearthstone Bay and multiple graded stakes finalist Leader Bored.
Finishing second was Conquistadorable B (Valiant Hero-She Travels), who was claimed for $7,500 in her last start by owner/trainer David Eastwood. Ceasar Carrillo rode the filly.
Favored Cmon Man (Corona Cartel-Ima Ramblin Girl) ran third. Charlton Hunt trains
the colt, who carried a two-race winning streak— including an allowance win on Jan. 8—into the Tallahassee. Pat and Walt Fletcher own Cmon Man, who was ridden by Brian Theriot.
Razmajazz (Country Chicks Man-Elusive Martini) was fourth, followed by PT First La Jolla (Dash To First Place-The La Jolla Factor), Hez Tricky Too (Okey Dokey Dale-Eyes Tricky Too), Rapid Ivory (Ivory James-Rapid Fire Cash), Patti Corona Today (King Corona-Todays Market) and Bankrupt City (Identity Theft-Rebs Hot Chick). Bugsz was scratched.
Sawgrass Stakes
CHi TeR
by Tracy Gantz
Despite his name, Chi Ter doesn’t have to cheat to win. Instead, he handles his competition with consummate professionalism, even when others behave erratically, such as in the Feb. 5 Sawgrass Stakes at Hialeah Park.
Chi Ter broke near the lead from the rail, and right out of the gate PLS Clock Watcher to his outside veered in and brushed him. Chi Ter paid no attention and continued to respond to jockey Cody Smith’s urging, while PLS Clock Watcher zigzagged down the stretch. Chi Ter won decisively by 1 1/4 lengths in :21.457 for the 440 yards.
A year ago at Hialeah, Chi Ter captured the Hialeah Invitational Championship Stakes, and he picked up right where he left off when he returned
to the Florida track in December, winning an allow- ance prior to the Sawgrass. As a two-year-old, he
won 2009 Oklahoma-Bred Futurity-RG3, and at three he added the 2010 Altoona Derby-G3 at Prairie Meadows and South Florida Invitational at Hialeah. Jackie Kirby trains Chi Ter for owner Mary Passmore. Herb and Doris Pierce bred him in Oklahoma from unraced This Chicks Stylish. The mare’s four winners from five starters include 2009 Canterbury Park Derby winner Make Out Artist.
Richard Joneson’s Fast N Furrious (Country Chicks Man-The Cheetah), who won the Hialeah Sophomore Invitational last year, finished second for jockey Alex Baldillez Jr. and trainer Guillermo Valdivia.
Yordanis Amaro rode Legendary Express (Ocean Runaway-Metered Express) to third for owner Sammy Massey and trainer Jack Murray.
Completing the field were PLS Clock Watcher (Marthas Easy-Little Glamour Pants), Talented Magician (Prime Talent-Magical Affection), Feedingmygator (Pritzi Dash-Lizas Mystique), Blood Red Cadillac (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Hanna B Jazzin), and Sassy Shaelan (Bono Jazz-Rsassy Sarah).
