Garañones Futurity

Of the 473 yearlings that went through the Selecta Auction held in 2018 at the Hipodromo de Las Americas, 220 were
enrolled in the 26 demanding qualifying
races leading to the finals of the Garañones Futurity, which were held on June 22 and 23 at a distance of 300 yards. Of the total registered, only 209 competed in the trials, since 11 were scratched for various reasons.
A total purse of $6,291,625 pesos (approxi- mately US $327,084) was collected for this contest, of which $4,431,437 pesos (approxi- mately US $230,378) went to the finalists and the rest was used to incentivize the owners
of the stallions of the finalists, to reward the consolation race, and to cover the expenses of the Mexican Association of Quarter Horse Breeders and Horsemen in their capacity as organizer of the event.
The performance of the qualifiers were out- standing, especially from the three who led the list of times: Malefico Cartel in :14.91; Jabulani Dash in :14.94, and By Jess Horse in :15.00, those also being the ones that monopolized the public’s betting preference from the days lead- ing up to the great race, from which the colt BR Jess Winner was scratched.
At the beginning of the finals, five partici- pants had a clean departure, while the others pressed towards the center. Those responsible for such disorder were Jabulani Dash (#6, from position 8) and Rex Sambaso (#1A, position 5),
who bumped and limited the passage of Corona Sheeza and No Baja. The stewardess only sanctioned Jabulani Dash, lowering him from sixth to eighth place.
While that was occur-
ring, Malefico Cartel assumed command
of the group at a high speed very close to
the inside rail and under the command of Leonardo Vidaña. When it seemed that this duo would reach the finish-line in first place, in the two final strides he was hunted down by By Jess Horse in the center of the field to overcome him by a neck’s difference under the calm and masterful command of José Ángel Ambrosio Medina in front of the thun- derous public that made the enclosure rumble as the steeds passed.
By Jess Horse finished the distance in an impressive :14.96 for a speed index of 102, improving by .04 hundredths of a second from his previous qualifying time.
The whole team of Cuadra El Manantial, owner of the winner, family and friends gathered in the winner’s circle to witness the great event. In the recent Mexico Futurity, they had finished second behind One Zulu Dragon after being the fastest in the qualifying races
in :12.866, the only one that broke the 13 second barrier at 250 yards. In this way, from four starts, By Jess Bye has obtained three firsts
and a second place, always registering speed indices of 100 or more.
Raised in Ciudad Cuauhtémoc, Chihuahua, by Salomé Gallegos Fernández, the gelding is by the stal-
lion Sea Horse Corona and out of the mare Feature Bye Jess (by Dashin Bye). He was consigned by his breeder to the Select Yearling Auction, where he was quoted at $420,000 pesos (approximately $21,533 US), becoming the property of Cuadra El Manantial, who entrusted his breaking and training to José Ángel Santos Zamudio; then taking him to his stables in Alvarado, Veracruz State, from where he was shipped to compete at the Hipodromo de las Américas on a road trip of 7 to 8 hours.
“We are very happy with the triumph of this day, because the horse had to impose itself on excellent rivals on a muddy track, proving what he has shown in his previous outings and in the work we have done in his preparation. Thanks to all who, with their daily efforts, make this possible. It is a pleasure to be part of Cuadra El Manantial. Now we will prepare him for the Select Auction Futurity, which starts in August,” said José Ángel Santos, who in 2014 won the Garañones Futurity him-
self with the filly NC Rose and in 2011 the AQHA Juvenile Challenge of Mexico with Project Runaway B.
