Cherokee Stakes
HALLMARKE
by Tracy Gantz
While Sandy Ridge, a new Quarter
Horse racetrack, is being built in Boyd County, Kentucky, the organization is con- ducting racing at The Red Mile in Lexington, Kentucky. Hallmarke became the first
stakes winner at the 2023 meeting as well as Kentucky’s first Quarter Horse stakes winner in 10 years, when she captured the $47,000 Cherokee Stakes on April 1.
Ridden by Gilbert Ortiz for trainer Justin Powell, Hallmarke broke on top in the 220- yard Cherokee Stakes. The 4-year-old filly battled with several others to prevail by a neck in :11.786, while posting a 104 speed index.
Not only did Hallmarke win a nice purse for her owner Laney Fowler, the entire trip has been enjoyable for Fowler and her boyfriend, Justin Powell, who trains the filly. The two of them traveled from their home base in Texas, Powell bringing a string of horses for the six- day race meet.
