Mexico Derby
LA CORONA EAGLE
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translated by Speedhorse
This is the first Derby of the current racing season at the Hipodromo de Las Américas. The final took place on March 12, with the participation of the 10 qualifiers from the three trials held on Feb. 26, in which 21 three year olds born in Mexico participated and which went through the 2021 Select Yearling Auction and met all established registration requirements.
The Derby was run at a distance of 300 yards for a purse of $1,033,040 pesos (approximately $23,212 US), and it was La
Corona Eagle who collected the winner’s share (42%) of the purse.
In the race, the interference to LA Cold Is Sweet (#3) by DK Batma Cartel and EC Apollicalprime was noted, which prevented their advance and determined their arrival in last place. In contrast, Blue Krash made a powerful start from the #1
position and immediately took command of the action near the inside rail. Meanwhile, La Corona Eagle did the same from the center of the track and set up a successful charge, beating Blue Krash in the final yards and crossing the line 1/2-length to the good under the calm command of Ángel Santillán Estrada
