The Prize Classic
CHOCOZOOM
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
The 10 finalists in this race came from the qualifying races held on April 14 at a distance of 300 yards, where the best time of :15.15 was recorded by the filly Notorius Brown.
Notorius Brown’s position in gate 9
bode well for her and the filly was marked the favorite to win. However, when depart- ing, she broke outwards, hitting Amazing Grays and losing valuable fractions that were reflected in the final result. Very close to them, Chocazoom came out with force and no trouble, finding the space necessary to run freely. Meanwhile, very close to the inner rail and moving with power was Just Aint and Volcoms Angel, both determined to take the lead in the group. However, Chocazoom took advantage of the track conditions and
in the last third of the distance, dominated and was the first to cross the finish line under Jorge Rugerio Cruz. The colt fin- ished a head in front of Volcoms Angel, who outperformed with the same difference over Notorius Brown.
It took :15.42 (SI 88) to achieve this
feat and the colt pocketed $378,012 pesos (approximately $19,768 US), the main part
of the $630,020 pesos ($32,946 US dollars approx- imately) assigned to the first stakes race for two year olds this season.

for $5,500. He was saddled by trainer Rafael Alejandro Contreras González.
Cuadra Tlalpan, owner of Chocazoom, is located in Zitácuaro, in the State of Michocán, and to date has six sprinters bred in the United States, focusing mainly in match-races, but with plans to venture more frequently into the Hipodromo de las Americas.
On behalf of the Cuadra, Carlos Eraclio Barrera said that in the decision to purchase Chocazoom at the San Antonio auction, his genetics and physical conformation sealed the decision. “In addition to these attributes,
we think that the basis of his success is that he has been well broke, a task that we entrust to Rancho Santa Fe,” he said. “Before debut- ing him at the racecourse, we won two races in a row in addition to his dead- heat in the trials and now in the finals of The Prize Classic, which makes him undefeated.”
“The colt is in perfect condition and we plan to run him in the
Jodys Glory Classic and in the Juvenile Championship at the end of this season,” said Carlos Eraclio, the young man who
is responsible for the physical preparation
of the sprinter, along with Gabino Barrera and Jorge Ramos who are in charge of the stable. “We also recognize and appreciate the excellent professional work of riders Mario Alberto López Marmolejo and Jorge Rugerio Cruz,” the enthusiastic trainer concluded.
The filly Volcoms Angel (Volcom- Peacefully) finished in second place under the command of Arturo Romero. She is
