Mexico Derby
ZE DANCER ARANDAS
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
Nine qualifying races were held on April 15 to obtain the 10 finalists for the Mexico Derby. There were 52 horses nominated to the
race, of which 50 competed in the trials due to the scratching of BR Corona Dove and Super Tres Shiney.
This stakes is restricted to the 452 Mexican horses that went through the 2016 Selecta Auction at the Hipódromo de las Américas. The trials were very competitive races, where the difference between the first and the tenth fastest qualifiers was .10 hundredths of a second, less than 1-length among them. At the top of the qualifying list were three males: Mr Carano, No Attain and Ze Dancer Arandas, in that order, and all winners of their respective trial races, having the concentration of betting preferences and with great expectations from the fans and participating teams.
Soon, the riders and horses were inside
the gates ready to run over the sandy track. Everyone broke cleanly, with EC Vigilante
(#5) going to the front in the first yards of
the race, but quickly being overtaken by Ze Dancer Arandas (#2), who was racing to beat No Attain (#9), who from the right was an imminent danger. The race became a match between these two sprinters, but Ze Dancer Arandas was the winner under the command of José Manuel Cisneros. They stopped the clock at :15.02 for the 300 yards, earning a 102 speed index with a time that improved over the :15.21 with which he qualified to the finals.
In this way, the son of Ze Dancer out of Arandas Andy (by Andy Sixes) scored his ninth triumph and second stakes race since win- ning the 2017 Mexican Breeders Futurity. In addition, he was the consolation winner of the Mexico Futurity and Garañones Futurity (by disqualification of Rey De Reyes).
A great campaign is expected for the three year old, as it will be measured against the
best of Mexican breeding. He comes from the prestigious Cuadra Hacienda Vieja in the name of which he runs, and is under the training of Epifanio Carrasco Sandoval.
The prize raised for this event was $825,000 pesos (approximately $43,733 US dollars), of which $346,500 pesos (approximately $18,368 US dollars) was added to the account of Ze Dancer Arandas, who has now accumulated more than 2 million pesos in his career.
The gelding No Attain (Bullish One-La Chuchena) was in second place by a neck under the command of José Ángel Ambrosio
Medina. No Attain is owned by the Hacienda San Martín Notario and was saddled by Rafael Alejandro Contreras García. Bred by Cuadra La Presita, the sorrel won the Mexican Breeders Challenge Futurity and is also the winner of the respective Derby, by disqualification of the filly Clasic Chic.
Third place went to
EC Vigilante (Watchful Vigilance-Carrion My Secret), owned by Cuadra Díaz de León and under
the command of Martín Hernández Bautista for the aforementioned winning trainer Epifanio Carrasco Sandoval. The colt was bred by Enrique Carrión.
The other finalists
crossed the finish line in
the following order: Pantera
Down Dash (Aguerrido–La
Pantera Gris), Rabbits Last
Dash (Rabbits Rainbow–Hey You Trouble), R Quick Run (Trick On The Run–Quick FF), Mr Carano (Mr Queens Mystery–Princess Carano), Jump Horse (Sea Horse Corona– Jump In Style), Z Real Perry (Azyoucansee– Real Quick Perry) and SF Simple Quick Heart (SF Simple Quick Dash–HL Corona Heart).
