Speedhorse Photo Archive Answer
The photo on page 177 shows Ginger Hyland with her favorite riding horse, the 1964 gelding Mr. Swifter by Top Deck. Ginger, her parents Pat and Muriel, and their 400-acre White Oaks Ranch were active in the horse business for decades and bred the earners of over $5.6 million, including AQHA Hall of Fame Horse/World Champion Dashingly, Champion Florentine, Champion Calyx, and Champion Ive Been Blessed.
Ginger graduated from the University of Kentucky with a degree in animal science, where she obtained the highest grades ever recorded in that department. “Girls grow up, and horses grow old,” Ginger said in a 1979 “Speedhorse Women” article. “The girls usually leave home. I didn’t.” Ginger continued on at the family farm, and her father, L.A. “Buzz” Hyland, paved the way for her to become a leader in the horse industry. Buzz, an entrepreneur credited with discovering radar and president and chairman of the board of Howard Hughes’ aircraft empire, was deeply immersed in the horse industry. He was involved with the Pacific Coast Quarter Horse Racing Association, Quarter Racing Inc., and the Horsemen’s Quarter Horse Racing Association, was elected as a director to AQHA, and served on the research committee.
Ginger was an appointed member of the research committee, serving for 15 years including as chairman, and served on the stud book and registration committee until she was elected to the executive committee in 1993. Perhaps her biggest achievement came in 1997, when she made history becoming AQHA’s first female president. After her retirement in 1998, Ginger continued as a member of the stud book and registration committee, investment oversight and finance committees, and the Foundation committee and Foundation council.
Ginger currently owns and operates The Towers, a restored Victorian-style farmhouse bed and breakfast in Natchez, Mississippi, and is president of the Natchez Pilgrimage Homeowners Association. “More young people should get involved with horses to teach them responsibility, grooming, understanding of animals and compassion for other people,” Ginger said to Speedhorse in 1973. Her words still ring true today.
