Woven Web TB (aka Miss Princess, pictured left), by Depth Charge, was inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame in 2016. Woven Web, through her daughter Baloma, formed a female line that produced . . .
2-time Champion Deceptively
compete at the classic distances, he became a speed specialist.
Depth Charge retired to stand at the King Ranch Thoroughbred Division in Kentucky. His breeding career carried him to California, Texas and Oklahoma. He sired Quarter Horse runners that earned $583,468, including four Quarter Horse racing Champions. He also sired Thoroughbred foals with earnings of $1,824,132. Depth Charge is found in many great pedigrees today, and his influence as a sire is noted by the fact that he is a member of the AQHA Hall of Fame.
Woven Web, a Thoroughbred daughter
of Bold Venture, was sent to Mexico to race. Her race record shows that she had six official Thoroughbred starts with four wins. She was
a stakes winner in Mexico in the Campeonato de Potrances. She came back to the states to become Miss Princess, the AQHA World Champion in 1946, 1947 and 1948. She was undefeated in her 11 starts on Quarter Horse tracks and set 9 track records with two of those races setting world records.
Kleberg bred Woven Web to Depth Charge to get Baloma. This mare went to the Fair Grounds in New Orleans to win two stakes races at two. She set a track and world record with her win in the Debutante Stakes, going 440 yards in :21.4. Baloma equalled that record a week later winning the John’s Joy Stakes.
Woven Web, through Baloma, would form
a female line that is credited with a number of Quarter Horse racing Champions. They include Deceptively, Femmes Frolic and Runnning Brook Gal. When we look at these Champions, we see why Woven Web is in the AQHA Hall of Fame.
Bruja, bred by the King Ranch, is the
dam of Woven Web, and she shows the speed from this family. Bruja is by Livery and out
of Chicaros Hallie by Chicaro. Bruja counted among her foals not only Woven Web, but
also Encantadora, a world record holder at 5 furlongs, and Haunted, a world record holder at 4 1/2 furlongs.
The influence of the King Ranch comes into focus with Top Deck, who was born on
the King Ranch in 1945. The broodmare sire of Top Deck is Chicaro. The pedigree of Top Deck illustrates how Kleberg used line breeding to build his pedigrees. Top Deck shows a breeding pattern of 4x4 to Peter Pan, 3x4 to Man O’War and 4x4x5x5 to Broomstick.
Top Deck was unraced due to an injury. Kleberg turned him over to John Dial to stand at stud. He went on from there to become
an influential sire through foals like 3-time AQHA World Champion and leading sire Go Man Go. Top Deck is the sire of Moon Deck, the sire of the great stallions Jet Deck and Top Moon. Jet Deck then sired Easy Jet. The Top Deck sire line through Easy Jet is represented
