AQHA Hall of Fame horse Top Deck TB, who was foaled on the King Ranch in 1945, and is a good example of how Kleberg used line breeding to build his pedigrees. Top Deck became an influential sire of Quarter Horses, including AQHA Hall of Fame horses Champion Go Man Go and Moon Deck – the sire of World Champion/AQHA Hall of Fame horse Jet Deck, the sire of World Champion/AQHA Hall of Fame horse Easy Jet.
today by such leading sires as Mr Jess Perry, Apollitical Jess and One Famous Eagle. This is only a part of the contribution of Top Deck that has put him into the AQHA Hall of Fame. Go Man Go, Moon Deck, Jet Deck, Top Moon and Easy Jet are all members the AQHA Hall of Fame.
B. F. Phillips Jr., the owner of Phillips Ranch in Frisco, Texas, had put together an outstanding performance horse breeding program in the 1950’s. Phillips decided to change directions
in the 1960’s to move his breeding program
into Quarter Horse racing. The success of the King Ranch Thoroughbred breeding program gave Bob Kleberg a good supply of speed bred mares, and Phillips and Kleberg got together and worked out a breeding partnership that allowed Phillips to use some of the speed bred mares to breed running Quarter Horses.
Phillips selected the mares he wanted to breed to Quarter Horse stallions, like Go Man Go by Top Deck, and Rocket Wrangler by Rocket Bar. Some Kinda Man by Go Man Go was born in 1969 from the King Ranch mare Anaqua by
Beau Max. Anaqua is out of Lantana Queen, who is by Depth Charge and out of Border Jane, a granddaughter of Chicaro. Some Kinda Man won the Ruidoso Derby, Three Bars Handicap and the Sunland Park Fall Derby. Some Kinda Man was listed as bred by the King Ranch,
and he raced under the partnership of the King Ranch and B.F. Phillips.
Dash For Cash, by Rocket Wrangler, was born in 1973 out of Find A Buyer by To Market. Find A Buyer would be in the third set of King Ranch Thoroughbred mares Phillips used. Dash For Cash went on to be a 2-Time Champion of Champions winner on his way to being the 1976 and 1977 AQHA Racing World Champion. He went from his racing career to be the all-time leading sire of money winners. He was replaced on this list by his son First Down Dash. Dash For Cash is listed as bred by B. F. Phillips Jr., and he was raced by the partnership of the King Ranch and B. F. Phillips Jr. Dash For Cash is in the AQHA Hall of Fame where his foals First Down Dash, Dashingly and Dashing Phoebe have joined him.
