from wanting to utilize sex linked genes or gene combinations supplied by the male and female horses that descended from the com- mon female ancestor.
Pedigree analyst Rommy Faversham and his mentor the late Leon Rasmussen are
big supporters of inbreeding and linebreed- ing to prominent females. Rassmusen first professed his interest in inbreeding to female influences in the late 1990s, and Faversham joined him in their crusade to promote line- breeding to prominent female ancestors.
Rasmussen and Faversham labeled
their theory Female Family Inbreeding (FFI). They found a significant number of important individuals which were inbred
to what they term foundation females. The FFI is based on the complimentary strains
of a common female ancestor appearing
on both the sire side and the dam side of a pedigree. Rasmussen started what came to be known as the Rasmussen Factor (RF). The RF occurs when the common female ances- tor appears within the first five generations on the sire and dam sides of a pedigree.
Again, Three Bars is a good example. Three Bars has a pedigree influenced by inbreeding to a female. His dam is Myrtle Dee, a very speedy track record-setting mare. She is by Luke McLuke, another great source of speed. Luke McLuke is out of Midge,
who is out of *Sandfly. The dam of Myrtle Dee is Civil Maid, by Patriot. Patriot is out of *Sandfly. Thus Myrtle Dee is inbred to *Sandfly with a breeding pattern of 3x3.
*Sandfly was an imported mare from England with an interesting pedigree. The Equineline.com pedigree for this mare
states that she was unraced. She is sired by Isonomy, who is out of Isola Bella, who is
sired by Stockwell, son of Pocahontas. The dam of *Sandfly is Sandiway, by Doncaster, by Stockwell, a son of Pocahontas. Thus Sandiway is inbred to Pocahontas through her son Stockwell and we know how successful Tesio was with inbreeding to Pocahontas. This perfectly illustrates inbreeding to a female ancestor that is inbred to a female ancestor.
Here is an added note on the pedigree of Esters Little Klu. Esters Little Klu is inbred to a mare named Selene with a breeding pattern of 5x5. Selene is inbred to Pilgrimage with a 3x4 breeding pattern through Loved One and Canterbury Pilgrim. Selene is
the dam of such noted sires as Sickle and Hyperion. Canterbury Pilgrim is inbred to Banter with a 5x5 breeding pattern.
THE ORIGIN OF THE SPEED GENE
The latest genetic information on how to develop speed in a horse comes from Professor Emmeline Hill of the School of Agriculture, Food Science, and Veterinary Medicine at
to find competition from his brothers, as Corona Czech is the sire of El Aquila Real, winner of the 2012 Los Alamitos Winter Championship-G1, and 2011 Leading Freshman Sire Valiant Hero is the sire
of Mighty B Valiant, winner of the 2011 Remington Park Futurity.
INBREEDING/LINEBREEDING TO A FEMALE ANCESTOR
Ken McLean tells us that Tesio “learned the important fact that linebreeding to a dominant broodmare is not only a successful method of breeding good runners, but the individuals so bred can transmit their supe- rior have qualities to future generations.”
One of the most significant uses of a
mare through linebreeding by Tesio is the great mare Pocahontas. Pocahontas is a daughter of *Glencoe, from his first foal crop in England before he was exported to the United States where he became a phenom- enal broodmare sire.
Tesio actively used individuals (mares and stallions) that carried the blood of Pocahontas. One of his favorite was Tracery. Tracery has
a breeding pattern of 6x7x6x6x6x7x6x6x5 to Pocahontas. Tracery got his crosses to this great mare through Stockwell, Rataplan,
King Tom, Ayacanora and Araucaria, all foals out of Pocahontas. This shows us that Tesio used Pocahontas through both her sons and daughters, not just her sons. The idea behind using sons and daughters in the pedigree came
