Since trainer James Gonzales II ponied Pick Your Pour to the gate himself for the $341,862 Mountain Top Futurity-RG2 at Ruidoso Downs on June 19, he didn’t have the best vantage point for watching what turned out to be a winning performance.
“I was behind the gate,” said Gonzales. “I could see that he left pretty good, but on down the track, I wasn’t too sure.”
If he had been in the grandstand, Gonzales would have seen Pick Your Pour break well and on top under jockey Mario Delgado. The gelding surged to the front immediately and sped down the track ahead of his rivals. He kept drawing away to win by 2-lengths in :17.473 for 350 yards as the 3-1 second choice, earning a 95 speed index. The $146,887 winner’s share of the purse swelled his bankroll to $150,487.
