Debbie Schauf Remington Park Invitational Championship-G1
DANJER
by John Moorehouse
Here’s an inkling into just how tough a jockey is.
In mid-April, Cody Smith suffered a broken
ankle that required the insertion of three screws to repair. In almost any other sport, it would be a season-ending injury that required months of recovery time. Smith rode in a Paint race 12 days after the screws were inserted surgically, and about a month after the mishap, he returned to the track at Remington Park.
Smith is also the regular rider of Danjer, last year’s World Champion. In his absence, Danjer posted an uncharacteristic eighth-place finish. Rider and horse reunited for the $270,880 Debbie Schauf Invitational Remington Park Championship-G1 on May 28, and Danjer returned to familiar sites—the winner’s circle. Danjer won this race last year, as well.
“Sitting on the sidelines, it doesn’t matter if it’s a $5,000 claimer. Sitting there and watching a win, it’s hard to do,” Smith said.
