Mexico Futurity
CARLITA JESS
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
This is the first restricted futurity of the season for foals born in Mexico, who were presented at the 2021 Select Yearling Sale held at the Hipódromo de Las Américas.
Of the 207 registered horses, 197 participated in the 24 trial races on April 16 and 17 at a distance of 250 yards. The five fastest times from each day advanced to the final, while the next five advanced to
the consolation.
All the times of the first day were faster than those of the second, both for the final and for the consolation, due in part to the direction and speed of the wind which favored the first day of trials.
SF Hunter Bank and Blue Krash stood out with :12.891 and :12.918, respectively, being the only ones that had times less than :13.00, while very close to them was Day Cartel with :13.041 who set a New Track Record for 220 yards in her first start, which encouraged her owners to pay the special nomination fee of $150,000 pesos ($7,357 U.S. approx.).
Everything was ready for the final, in which SF Hunter Bank and Blue Krash monopolized the betting preferences. The purse was also very attractive, since the futurity gathered
$6,478,300 pesos ($317,746 U.S. approx.), of which $4,873,725 pesos ($239,535 U.S. approx.) were destined
to reward the 10 finalists according to their position of arrival at the finish line. The winner’s share was 42% of the purse, at exactly $2,051,164 pesos ($100,605 U.S. approx.).
On the track, the action was fast due to the short distance and the proven speed of the ten finalists. It was the fillies Azal Storm and Carlita Jess who showed the most opportune start from the far right of the track, holding
a close head-to-head duel with Carlita Jess crossing the finish line a neck in front.
Favorite SF Hunter Bank (#4) started late, but in the final yards diverted his path to the left and swerved into Felino Eagle, earning him a disqualification from eighth to tenth place.
Carlita Jess’s time was :12.85 for a 99 speed index under Yair Daniel Báez Soto.
The result filled the entire team and followers with joy and emotion, led by her breeder and owner Luis Arturo Vázquez Solórzano and his girlfriend Carla María Carranza Shulemburg,
to whom the winner owes her name. The award ceremony was led by Janet VanBebber, Chief Racing Officer of the American Quarter Horse Association, accompanied
by Javier Rosique León, President of the Mexican Association of Breeders and
Horsemen of Quarter Horses, and Dr. Anselmo Aguilar Payán, Treasurer of said Association.
Carlita Jess qualified for the final event in trial number eight on April 17 with a time of :13.263 (the ninth best of the qualifiers), winning by 3/4-length in her debut and also ridden by Yair Daniel Báez. She is by Red Storm Cat (by Mr Jess Perry) and out of Kar Dash Ability B (by Teller Cartel).
The filly was sold at the Select Yearling Sale of the Hipodromo de las Américas as hip number 430, where she was sold for $320,000 pesos ($15,365 U.S. approx.), being repurchased by her breeder and now also trainer, Luis Arturo Vázquez (with the assistance of Daniel Mesa), to be part of his Cuadra Vázquez. She was saddled by Carlos Villanueva Campos.
Making a great race and under the command of Alejandro Gómez, Azal Storm (Red Storm Cat-Azalways Cajun) was placed in second for the Cuadra San Pedro PZH, being also saddled by Carlos Villanueva Campos. The filly was bred by Luis Arturo Vázquez Solórzano.
In third place was the gelding Felino Eagle (Jabuti Eagle SA-Feminine) with Silvestre Mar aboard for Cuadra H-R, trainer Ismael Ayala, and breeder Salome Gallegos.
After the disqualification of SF Hunter Bank, the order of arrival was as follows: Streakin Reyna (Streakin Sixes–My Reyna), Day Cartel (Krash Cartel–Day Drink In), Sky Hipólito (Awethentic–Brimmertons Chick), CC Cartel One (Danny Cartel–La Jolla One), Blue Krash (Krash Cartel–Santa Aguerrida), Jump Eagle (Jabuti Eagle SA–Jump In Style) & SF Hunter Bank (SF Tempting Bank–SF Be Simple).
On the right side of the track, Carlita Jess (#1A) surprised the favorites under the direction of Yair Daniel Báez.
