Fire won the inaugural $100,000 Abigail Kawananakoa Stakes on June 12 at Los Alamitos, Robert Kirk Gentry said how special it was to win a race named for the longtime Quarter Horse owner and breeder.
Kiss Thru Fire dominated the 400-yard Kawananakoa. She broke sharply for jockey Jesus Ayala and led almost from the start, with an easy 1 1/2-length victory in :19.754 for a 92 speed index.
The Champion Aged Mare of 2021, Kiss Thru Fire has won back-to-back runnings of the Charger Bar Handicap-G1, as well as the 2021 Denim N Diamonds Handicap-G3, California Breeders’ Matron Stakes-RG3, and Sound Dash Handicap. She has placed in five other stakes and now has earnings of $636,025
Gentry Farms bred Kiss Thru Fire in Kentucky out of homebred Fredaville. A full sister to Champion Fredricksburg, Fredaville won seven stakes throughout her career and was voted the Champion Aged Mare of 2012. Fredaville has produced five winners from six starters, including Mexico stakes winner Beer Wagon and graded stakes-placed Kiss My Heineken.
Cruz Mendez piloted Famous Shining Star (One Famous Eagle-Thewayouwantmetoo) to second for owner Johnny Trotter and trainer Jose Flores. Famous Shining Star won the 2022 Virginia Hyland Stakes.
Paul Jones trains third-place Suite Expectations (Apollitical Jess-Just A Fairytale) and owns her with Thompson Racing Inc. Jose Nicasio rode the 5-year- old mare, who has placed in four earlier stakes.
Completing the field were Inaudible (Foose- Little Talks), Up For You (Favorite Cartel-Up For It), and College Scandal (Coronas Leaving You-Fovee). Jet Wings One was scratched.

hicks First Flash nabbed his first stakes victory
in the $25,000 Fred Scane Handicap at Los Alamitos on June 18. It was also his first attempt at 350 yards, having competed earlier at 220 yards and 300 yards.
Chicks First Flash broke well under jockey Armando Cervantes and went to the front quickly. He held off all the competition to score by 1 1/4 lengths in :17.667, good for a 91 speed index. Second in a maiden race in his debut, Chicks First Flash won his trial for the Robert Adair Kindergarten Futurity-G2, and he finished second in the Kindergarten final.
Monty Arrossa trains Chicks First Flash for owners Five Livestock Company and Steve Wright. Five Livestock bred Chicks First Flash out of First Prize Chicks, winner of the 2016 Kip Didericksen Handicap and also trained by Arrossa. The mare has produced two winners from three starters, including stakes winner Chicks Dashin Bandit. The third dam is AQHA Broodmare of the Year First Prize Dash, a full sister to multiple graded winner and sire First Down Dash.
Hes Chickless (Hes Relentless-Chickitita), owned by Jeryl Hartley and bred by Hartley and her late husband, Ron, finished second. Juan Leon rode the colt for trainer John Cooper. He’s Chickless won both of his prior races.
M & M Racing Stables’ homebred Imm Born To Fly (Apollitical Spirit-Flash N The Boys) finished third under jockey Cruz Mendez for trainer Jose Flores. Imm Born To Fly also won both of his previous races.
Completing the field were One Sweet Bar (Five Bar Cartel-One Sweet Runner), Mr Secret Cartel (Mr Ease Cartel-Secret Forest), and VGK Fire
Fly (Fly Thru The Fire-The One The Only One). Attacker was scratched.
Check Her Twice Stakes

n My Heart captured her first lifetime stakes on
June 12 in the Check Her Twice Stakes. However, she had to play second fiddle to Champion
Kiss Thru Fire, who won the $25,000 Abigail Kawananakoa Stakes-G2 on the same Los Alamitos card. Gentry Farms bred and owns both.
It was a good effort by In My Heart, who went off as the 2-5 favorite in the Check Her Twice. With Jesus Ayala aboard, In My Heart broke on top from the outside. She was never headed and powered home to win by a 1/2-length, getting the 350 yards in :17.636, posting a 92 speed index.
Juan Aleman trains In My Heart for Robert Kirk Gentry and Robbi Force of Gentry Farms. In My Heart has spent her career at Los Alamitos and Ruidoso Downs, with three of her four victories at Los Alamitos. She was coming off two fourths in stakes at Los Alamitos.
Gentry Farms bred In My Heart in Kentucky out of Heartbeat, who started only three times, with one victory. A half-sister to Champions Fredricksburg and Fredaville (the latter the dam of Kiss Thru Fire), Heartbeat has produced three winners from five starters.
EG High Desert Farms’ homebred La Beverly Hills (Corona Czech-Jess Ravin) finished second under jockey Cruz Mendez for trainer Santos Perez. The 3-year-old filly broke her maiden at the end of last year and has a trial victory this year.
The Quarter Company’s homebred Looks On Fleek (Favorite Cartel-Dutch Secret) ran third. Ruben Lozano rode the 4-year-old filly for trainer Valentin Zamudio. Looks On Fleek has won her only other start, as a 2 year old in 2020.
Completing the field were Leah Carroll (Hes Relentless-Viva La Blue), Svelte (Seperate Interest- Hot Rocking), and Ms Ko (Corona Cartel-Whatta Knockout).
