Her dam was Nellie Gray by Blue Eyes. Tess S won the 1950 Speed Stakes and she was third in the 1950 Cele Peterson Handicap. She was also AA rated with 28 starts winning 10 of her races with six seconds and five thirds. She was bred by Marvin Scott of Gilbert, Arizona. Her dam was Della, an unregistered mare with her pedigree unknown.
When we look at the sire record
for Clabber, three sons stand out in his contribution at this stage of his career as a sire. They are Chester C, Wagon N and Jeep B. Chester C is interesting as he was bred by Chester Cooper, whom we saw in the last chapter on the life of Clabber, and Cooper was the breeder of such noted horses as Peggy N and Tonta Gal, the full sisters that have given us such horses as Tonto Bars Gill and Missile Bar, both Champions. Peggy N is the dam of Prescott Peggy Joe, the dam of Peggy Toro, the dam of Easy Six, who is the
sire of Streakin Six, the grandsire of Mr Jess Perry. Chester C was owned by Ab Nichols at one time.
As a racehorse, Chester C earned
an ROM with one win in 12 starts with three thirds. Chester C was the sire of such ROM runners as Chester D, Lady Chet, Lady Lorena, Miss Chester C, Miss Coolidge, Lady Lorena, Pop Roberts, Sumpthin Good and Thunder C.
The dam of Chester C was Lady C
by Guinea Pig by Possum. Possum is
the full brother of Little Joe, the sire of Zantanon, the sire of King P-234. The sire of Possum was Traveler, and his dam was Jenny by Sykes Rondo. The dam of Lady C was a mare by Bulger by Traveler. This gives the pedigree of Lady C a breeding pattern of 3x3 to Traveler.
Another Clabber son, Wagon N, was bred by Buck Nichols, and he was an ROM stakes placed runner. He was third in the 1951 Roy Adams Stakes and 1951 Traveler Stakes. He was also fifth in the 1949 Tucson Speed Stakes, fifth in the 1951 Big Hat Purse Stakes and sixth
in the 1953 Pima County Fair Premier Stakes. He made 74 starts with 10 wins, 19 seconds and 16 thirds.
Wagon N sired 35 starters with 10 earning ROM and one stakes winner. His ROM earners include Wagon’s Bimbo, Fame Frontier Gal, Blossom Gal, Miss Kitty, Chevagon, Feature Wagon, Flicka Wagon, Ballarina Gal and Clabber Juan. Clabber Juan is Wagon N’s stakes winner with three stakes wins in the 1953 New
Mexico State Fair Futurity, 1954 State Fair Stallion Stakes and 1956 Raton Handicap. He was second in the 1954 New Mexico Breeders Derby and third in the 1953 S. M. Beaudry Handicap, 1957 Flying Bob Stakes and 1957 Shue Fly Stakes. He had 76 starts with 13 wins, 12 seconds and 11 thirds in his race career. He earned a Speed Index of 100, or the old AAAT rating. Wagon N has sired daughters that produced 150 starters with 61 ROM and eight stakes winners. His maternal grandget earned $287,246 on the track. Wagon N’s leading money
Tonta Gal, by Clabber and bred by Chester Cooper, is the dam of Champion Tonto Bars Gill
Peggy Toro, whose second dam is Peggy N by Clabber, winning the 1964 Sunland Park Futurity.
