Fifth-fastest qualifier from the June 2 trials, Shes Sizzling scored her first stakes victory in
the $41,792 Ontario Bred Derby at Ajax Downs on June 16.
Racing for Erik and Joyce Lehtinen and aided by a reported 6-mph tail wind, Shes Sizzling cov- ered 300 yards in :15.470, dueling with and defeating second-fastest qualifier Shake It Twice by a neck.
Ramiro Castillo rode Shes Sizzling for owner/trainer Erik Lehtinen.
“She was very focused today, and she was just perfect,” said Castillo.
Shes Sizzling was coming off of a victory by disqualification in the second of two trials to the Ontario Bred Derby on June 2.
Campaigned in Ontario, Oklahoma, and Minnesota, Shes Sizzling has now won four of 10 races. The $16,717 winner’s share of this purse pushed her bankroll to $52,227.
Shes Sizzling won her trial to last year’s Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity at Canterbury Park, and was a finalist in the main stakes event. She was also a finalst in the 2018 Alex Picov Memorial Futurity at Ajax Downs.
The bay filly is out of winner Shenandoah Special, who ran third for the Lehtinens in the 2007 All Canadian Futurity.
Shake It Twice (Look At Magics Form-Shake Pretty Baby) was sec- ond for owner Chantelle Bourgeois, who also trained the homebred filly. Cory Spataro was in the
irons. Shake It Twice in 2018 was third in the Ontario Sires Stakes Futurity, and broke her maiden in her final start of last year.
Five Bar Fandango (Five Bar Cartel-Had To Be Fandango) was the fastest qualifier coming into this race, having won her trial wire-to-wire in :15.760. In the finals, she finished in third
place for owners Carol Robertson and Jaime Robertson. Tony Phillips was up for trainer Bryn Robertson. Five Bar Fandango was a finalist in last year’s Alex Picov Memorial Futurity.
Quick Bolls Jangle (Feature Mr Bojangles-Eyesa Quick) finished
in fourth place and was followed across the wire by Queens Award (Winners Award-Copper State Queen), A Fancy Arrangement (Sugarman Perry-Jessshazoom), Usain Colt (Star Fire Dash-Magic Ta Fame), Teller A Secret (Teller Cartel-Stoli Ware), and Carlos
The Second (Winners Award- Chitchatin Okie) Perryfunnysteven was scratched.
