Charles Stojan bought two year- lings at the 2016 Los Alamitos Equine Sale and came away with
two horses that won stakes at Grande Prairie on the Aug. 23 card.
True Copy, an $18,000 pur- chase at the sale, captured the ARC Evergreen Park Distaff Challenge, and Stripsteak, a $14,000 purchase at the sale, scored in the Bank of
America Evergreen Park Championship Challenge.
William Leech trains both run- ners for Stojan and Ricardo Moreno piloted them both.
True Copy, the odds-on favor-
ite in the 400-yard $22,253 ARC Evergreeen Park Distaff Challenge, broke second from the two-gate and battled with First Prize Cruise the entire way.
True Copy held second until
the top of the stretch, where she pulled ahead and edged out First Prize Cruise by a neck at the wire in
:20.480. The clocking was good for an 86 speed index.
The $11,126 winner’s share of the purse pushed True Copy’s earnings to $79,711.
True Copy, who has spent her entire racing career in Canada, has a race record of 19-11(4)-5(3)-1. Prior to this victory, she captured the 2017 Canada Quarter Horse Cup Futurity-G3, 2018 All Canadian Derby, and 2019 Grande Prairie Sprint Stakes. Her stakes-placings include a second to Stripsteak in the 2018 Canada Quarter Horse Cup Derby, and seconds in the Peace Country Derby and Jerry Stojan Memorial Futurity.
Dr. Ed Allred bred True Copy out of Realistically, who won the 2006 Kansas Derby-G3. The
mare has produced four winners from 10 starters, including Vivid, winner of the 2016 Miss Princess Handicap-G3 and two other stakes, and stakes-placed Smithy.
Tom Kenway bred, owns, and trains second-place finisher First Prize Cruise (First Prize Doc-Eye Cruise). Jockey D.I. Benitez rode the four-year-old filly, who has placed in several stakes.
Deanne Davies owns and trains Atomic Blondie (Birdzilla TB-Sables Val), who ran third under jockey Carl Hebert. Atomic Blondie won this year’s Alberta Stallion Stakes Maturity and was second in the 2018 All Canadian Derby and third in the Evergreen Park Distaff Challenge.
Completing the field were Shez My Hero (Valiant Hero-Daze Like This), Blink And Shes Gone (Gone To The Mountain-DJ Bright Dolly) and Knotty
Knita (First Timber-Ima Jess A Streaker). High Gloss Black was scratched.
